Stonewall: A Building, an Uprising, a Revolution | Rob Sanders
6 posts | 7 read | 4 to read
From Rob Sanders, author of the acclaimed Pride- The Story of Harvey Milk and the Rainbow Flag, comes this powerful and timeless true story that will allow young readers to discover the rich and dynamic history of the Stonewall Inn and its role in the gay civil rights movement--a movement that continues to this very day. In the early-morning hours of June 28, 1969, the Stonewall Inn was raided by police in New York City. Though the inn had been raided before, that night would be different. It would be the night when empowered members of the LGBTQ+ community--in and around the Stonewall Inn--began to protest and demand their equal rights as citizens of the United States. Movingly narrated by the Stonewall Inn itself, and featuring stirring and dynamic illustrations, Stonewall- A Building. An Uprising. A Revolution is an essential and empowering civil rights story that every child deserves to hear.

A great picture book about the Stonewall uprising. It‘s written in the perspective of the building—originally two stable houses—which is unique and I loved.

The story of the Stonewall Uprising is told from the point of view of the Stonewall Inn. From its start as two stables in 1843 to being named as a historic landmark in 2016, the Uprising of June 28, 1969, is of course the central event. The resistance that early morning was a spark igniting a movement for equal rights for LGBTQ+ that continues today.

This is a great simplified version of events for grade schoolers.

“How many times can one turn the other cheek?” a then 26-year-old musician in the Stonewall that night later asked. Stonewall riots 1969 on this day.

The birth of pride.

Told from the POV of the stables-turned-nightclub, this #picturebook has a glossary, additional notes, an eyewitness interview, & a history with photos. What else would you expect from an elementary school teacher? I could drink in the illustrations for days.
