What is it with me and the recent Miles Franklin winners? This is the 3rd of the last 6 years' worth that I have read and thoroughly disliked. In this case I'm not even going to bother finishing it. The writing is varying between pretentious and just plain dull and the story is not interesting enough to make me put up with it. #ozfiction

Rissreads Are there any Miles Franklin winners you have loved over the years? 6y
CarolynM @Rissreads Not many. The only one I absolutely loved is Tirra Lirra by the River. I liked The Mango Tree, Careful He Might Hear You and Dirt Music. 6y
Rissreads @CarolynM It would be interesting to see if the recent 3 books you have disliked were judged by the same judges? If so then you know that if you ever see their names printed on a book recommending it to PUT THE BOOK DOWN! (edited) 6y

CarolynM @Rissreads I've never really thought about who the MF judges are. You're right, I should find out and avoid anything any of them likes at all costs!!! 6y
Joanne1 I have better luck with the Stella prize winners and shortlist. 5y
CarolynM @joanne1 Can't say I've been impressed by the Stella winners either. The Prime Minister's and the Victorian and NSW Premiers' Awards have been better bets for me. 5y

Pickpick

⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2

I realise how conflicted I am on this book, its terse uneven prose, sometimes unwieldy poetry, elliptical and often oddly fantastical plot and yet it is bold and interesting.
The characters at its core - Jovan and his wife Suzana represent a heartbreaking immigrant experience, survivors of the Yogoslav wars.
I was not sure what to make of the plot line of a malevolent Banksie-type, stalking the hallways of Sandringham hospital...
