Duane's Depressed
Duane's Depressed: A Novel | Larry McMurtry
1 post | 4 read | 1 to read
Funny, sad, full of wonderful characters and the word-perfect dialogue of which he is the master, McMurtry brings the Thalia saga to an end with Duane confronting depression in the midst of plenty. Surrounded by his children, who all seem to be going through life crises involving sex, drugs, and violence; his wife, Karla, who is wrestling with her own demons; and friends like Sonny, who seem to be dying, Duane can't seem to make sense of his life anymore. He gradually makes his way through a protracted end-of-life crisis of which he is finally cured by reading Proust's Remembrance of Things Past, a combination of penance and prescription from Dr. Carmichael that somehow works. Duane's Depressed is the work of a powerful, mature artist, with a deep understanding of the human condition, a profound ability to write about small-town life, and perhaps the surest touch of any American novelist for the tangled feelings that bind and separate men and women.

• I‘m feeling quite depressed and unproductive tonight...anyone else want to join the pity party for just a few minutes? I‘m looking at this picture (not my own) and trying hard to cheer up buttercup. It‘s working—slowly but surely. I‘ll leave it for anyone else who might need it tonight or anytime really... •

britt_brooke Feel better. 💚 6y

bibliobliss @Texreader My condolences 😞 I hope we both feel better soon as well. I‘m already feeling better just to have some company. 6y
Texreader @Readage I know what you mean! My latest episode happened during insomnia last night. Ugh. Hard to do anything about it when you can‘t sleep and your brain is racing through miserable thoughts. Today was somewhat better. Work keeps my mind occupied. I hope for a better night. You? 6y
bibliobliss Insomnia has got to be brutal. I usually fall on the other end of the spectrum, where I could just sleep most of my life away when I‘m having a rough time. In fact, that‘s what I‘d prefer to do right now but I have a long night of studies ahead of me. I spent the last 3-4 hours on the phone with my SO dealing with his family drama. I‘m just feeling so depleted on behalf of both of us and honestly I‘m questioning so much right now. 6y
Texreader @Readage Oh oh my. I sympathize. You, my friend, sound like you desperately need some me-time and no time to take it. Glad you are on Litsy sharing this. I think it helps to get it off your chest even if in tiny bits. 6y
bibliobliss @Texreader Thank you. I wouldn‘t trade my Litsy time for the world! It does help to share a little of our burden, doesn‘t it? And that‘s really all he was trying to do as well—share his thoughts and frustration. Funny, it seems to help me to just know someone might need some encouragement at the same moment I do. Does that make any sense? Lol Which I‘m willing to provide because we all need to know we‘re not alone in this life. 6y
Texreader @Readage Yes it does!! I‘m off to sleep. I‘ll check back in when my insomnia wakes me. For several years, I‘ve had insomnia that wakes me in the middle of the night for hours. It‘s a wonder I‘m not perpetually depressed. I‘m just perpetually exhausted. 6y
bibliobliss @Texreader Bless you. I pray you‘ll sleep thru the night. If not, come back and chat. Lol. Thank you for coming to the “party” 🎉 6y
Texreader @Readage The prayer worked! I slept through the night. Miracle! But my son woke up this morning throwing up. He‘s got meds from the dr and doing better. And I‘m doing all right. Hope you are too!! 6y
bibliobliss @Texreader Yay 😁 that‘s great! Hope your son feels better soon. I‘m much better tonight. Thanks for checking in! Good luck tonight 😴 6y
