Under the Blood-Red Sun

Tomi was born in Hawaii. His grandfather and parents were born in Japan, and came to America to escape poverty. World War II seems far away from Tomi and his friends, who are too busy playing ball on their eighth-grade team, the Rats. But then Pearl Harbor is attacked by the Japanese, and the United States declares war on Japan. Japanese men are rounded up, and Tomi s father and grandfather are arrested. It s a terrifying time to be Japanese in America. But one thing doesn t change: the loyalty of Tomi s buddies, the Rats."

To be a kid, not to mention a Japanese-American kid, when Pearl Harbor happened...Wow I can only imagine. To see the events leading up, as well as those that followed, through his eyes was definitely eye-opening. To see the hatred he had to put up with daily it broke my heart at times.

A coworker asked for my opinion on this book because she is trying to find books for her son (who likes history & wars) to read. I have never read it but I offered to get it from the library & check it out. Time to put my book down for a bit & dive into this one.
