#TravelTuesday I will read anything by Christopher Paul Curtis. These 2 are set in Depression/Great Migration era Flint. The tagged was one of my daughter‘s favorites growing up. I love visiting historical places so The Henry Ford museum & Greenfield Village are on the top of my list. Pictured are my daughter and MIL sitting in the very seat Rosa Parks refused to give up. I think this book would be good for older kids. Younger kids would not be able to read this book. The themes in this book are more mature such as, homelessness during the Great Depression and racism.

The Mighty Miss Malone by Christopher Paul Curtis, 2012. Deza is the smartest girl in her class, she has been told there is a special path for her in life. The Great Depression has hit and her father lost his job and had to move away. Deza really earns her name Mighty Miss Malone. She had to go through a lot.

“Hoping is such hard work. It tires you out and you never seem to get any kind of reward. Hoping feels like you‘re a balloon that has a pinhole that slowly leaks air.”

I enjoyed how the book not only had historical content to it but still holds a lot of relevance to this current day in age.

Published in 2012, the story is based around a young girl named Deza who lives in Gary, Indiana. The time period is around the great depression, so even though Deza accelerates as a student she is still faced with discrimination and poverty as her father cannot find work. A very good and informational novel for children to read- but those of an older age group because of the mystery aspect potentially being too confusing for those younger in age

I like the beginning of the book and how they started it off with her writing an essay, and kinda starts building her character as the smartest girl in the class from the very beginning

Although I liked this book, I don‘t think it should be used for children younger than 3rd grade because it tells a story of hardships they might not understand yet

This is a historical fiction book. This book does tell a good story, that provides background information and includes different cultures and hardships

Fantastic middle grade story taking place in Gary, Indiana and Flint, Michigan during the Great Depression. Deza Malone is smart, funny, courageous and fiercely loyal to those she loves. I highly recommend the audiobook, read by Bahni Turpin.

I liked this book because it discussed a time period in history that was very challenging for many families in terms that younger readers can understand and empathize with.

This is a historical fiction story about a twelve year old Deza Malone. She is a smart girl destined for a special path. It takes place during the Great Depression and talks about the struggles her family has to face during these times.

This is a really hard story but it's beautifully done. Miss Malone is mighty indeed. Her character is similar to that of Anne of Green Gables. The deliberate spelling errors concern me - for those old enough to recognise they're deliberately wrong, it is funny but for those learning to spell and apply context from what they've read, it is less funny. For this reason I would only give this book to an older child who is a confident reader.

I don't care if it's middle grade, I think this is my new all time favorite book. And read by the incomparable Bahni Turpin- exquisite! A family faces the trials of the Great Depression with love and laughter. 5⭐️

I highly recommend this YA author - run to the nearest bookstore and buy all of his books. This was a great starting point for us to begin an ongoing dialogue about race, prejudice, poverty, privilege and history with our daughter.
