The Suspect
The Suspect | Michael Robotham
The novel that marked the debut of one of contemporary suspense fiction's most compelling heroes: "A gripping first novel...taut and fast-moving." --Washington Post Renowned psychologist Joseph O'Loughlin has it all--a thriving practice, a devoted, beautiful, fiercely intelligent wife, and a lovely young daughter. But when he's diagnosed with Parkinson's, O'Loughlin begins to dread the way his exceptional mind has been shackled to a failing body, and the cracks in his perfect existence start to show. At first, O'Loughlin is delighted to be called in to a high-profile murder investigation, hoping his extraordinary abilities at perception will help bring a killer to justice. But when O'Loughlin recognizes the victim as one of his former patients, an emotionally disturbed young woman who nearly brought ruin upon him, O'Loughlin hesitates-a fateful decision that soon places O'Loughlin at the top of the lists of both a bullish detective, and a diabolical killer

While searching for my next audiobook, I realized it‘s been awhile since I‘ve read any books by Michael Robotham. Further Goodreads research led me to the Joseph O‘Loughlin series. Joseph is a psychologist providing a lecture to prostitutes when he is approached by the police. He is asked to help with the identification of a woman recently found murdered, and who is believed to be a prostitute.

“Acclaimed author Michael Robotham conquered international best-seller lists with this electrifying thriller. After a woman is brutally slain, investigators bring psychiatrist Joe O'Loughlin in for expert consultation. Joe is shocked to discover the dead woman is a former patient of his who cried rape when he rebuffed her sexual advances.” This is a great series by Michael Robotham! I highly recommend it.

One of those Good Man Accused of Heinous Crime capers, which relied heavily on a series of coincidences and never really succeeded in making me care if or how the protagonist would clear his name. Bit daft, really.

BkClubCare Oh gosh, I heard-in-my-head your last sentence in an English accent. 😊 3y

I listened to this, as it was the free audiobook this month on Audible. I don't know if it was the book or the narrator but I did not like the MC. He just came across a bit pompous and I found the descriptions of women frequently unnecessarily sexualised.

I enjoyed most of this but some parts were a little tedious for me. The characters were well rounded and developed, the story flowed well and the mystery kept me guessing. Not my favourite book but certainly a keeper.

15-17 May 2021 (audiobook)
Crime fiction only features in my reading list when it is the free Audible book of the month. I do kind of enjoy it occasionally, just never enough to pay for it. This was a good example of the genre, I think - well-written and narrated, interesting characters but also the seemingly ubiquitous sexual abuse of the perpetrator in childhood. I did not pick the twist at the end.

A serial killer is on the loose and clinical psychologist Joseph O‘Loughlin is afraid that it may be one of his clients who is responsible. But this just one of Joseph‘s problems, he has just been diagnosed with Parkinson‘s, he has secrets which must not share with his family and the lead detective is coming to believe that he may be the killer. Despite one moment which for me fell flat, a good overall crime story.
