I‘m planning a trip to Scotland in late April. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I‘m looking for recommendations on travel guides or books about Scotland, as well as any suggestions on places to see and things to do.

Texreader That‘s awesome!!! Never been so I‘m no help but I can be a cheerleader!! 1y
wanderinglynn @Texreader thanks! I‘m so excited to start traveling again. 1y
Purpleness That‘s awesome! I‘ve never been either, but in general I‘ve liked the Lonely Planet guides. I would recommend checking the publishing date on whatever guides you‘re considering, though, as I bet a lot of info has changed since covid. 1y

vonnie862 We are going in June! I'll be looking forward to any posts. 1y
Bookwormjillk I went a million years ago but I remember loving Ft Williams and hiking through the heather around Ben Nevis. Loch Ness was really pretty too. 1y
JenReadsAlot Edinburgh is one of my favorite cities I've been too! We did a day trip up to Inverness and Loch Ness area as well. 1y
wanderinglynn @Purpleness thanks. I‘ll check them out. 1y
wanderinglynn @vonnie862 🙌🏻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 1y
wanderinglynn @Bookwormjillk thanks! I‘ll add it to my list. 1y
wanderinglynn @JenReadsAlot Edinburgh is a definite. I think Loch Ness and Inverness will make the list too. Thanks! 1y
ChaoticMissAdventures I went a few yrs ago for a wedding (in a castle!) We had high tea in Edinburgh at the Signet Library. It was wonderful highly recommend. Scotch tastings I'd you drink, I don't remember where we were but they made us take a barrel ride that felt a bit like Disney but about drinking 🤣. I liked this book for a sense of history 1y
wanderinglynn @ChaoticMissAdventures high tea sounds like fun! Thanks for the suggestions & book rec. 1y
Texreader @wanderinglynn I‘m going to Italy for the first time in May! So excited 1y
wanderinglynn @Texreader oh, Italy is wonderful! I loved Florence. 1y
Texreader @wanderinglynn We are considering Florence in our itinerary. What do you recommend doing in Florence? 1y
Ruthiella I‘ve not been there myself, but there is Wigtown, which has a high number of used bookstores. It‘s where Shawn Blythell has his shop 1y
Lunakay I loved the Peculiar History books and don't forget to go to all the Harry Potter places in Edinburgh!🤩 Also, don't skip Glasgow, it's an interesting and lively place with some unusual museums. 1y
Itchyfeetreader I just got back from a week near Oban which is very pretty and has great seafood. I personally prefer the west coast to the east and the ability to get out to some of the islands. If you are flying into London I‘d also suggest you consider getting the sleeper train at least one way up for a beautiful arrival. Enjoy 1y
wanderinglynn @Ruthiella that definitely needs to be on the itinerary! Thanks 1y
wanderinglynn @Lunakay thanks for the book rec! I will have to check out the museums in Glasgow 1y
julesG @scripturient goes nearly every year. I'm sure she has some suggestions. Also @Oryx maybe? 1y
wanderinglynn @Texreader what I remember most is the food! ?? But it was also the center of the Italian Renaissance, so there‘s the Duomo, the Galleria dell‘Accademia that displays Michelangelo‘s David, the Uffizi Gallery, the Palazzo Vecchio, thé Ponte Vecchio which has lots of lovely jewelry shops, & the outdoor market. 1y
Jess Edinburgh is fantastic and if you can make it up to the Isle of Skye, check out the Fairy Glen, Storr and the Fairy Pools. Stunning. Enjoy! 1y
wanderinglynn @Jess thanks! Yes, the Isle of Skye is definitely on the list. Thanks for the suggestions! 1y
rabbitprincess The museums in Edinburgh are excellent: the National Museum of Scotland and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. Also some great museums in Glasgow: the People‘s Palace and the Kelvingrove. For bookshops, Armchair in Edinburgh is gorgeous, and I‘ve never been to Leakey‘s in Inverness but desperately want to! 1y
rabbitprincess Also you may find you need to plan multiple trips to do Scotland justice 🤣 1y
wanderinglynn @rabbitprincess isn‘t that the truth? It‘s hard to see a country in 7-10 days. Thanks for the suggestions! 1y
squirrelbrain Ha @julesG - was just about to type the exact same thing, but saw your comment just in time! 😁 Have a fab trip Lynn - we‘re hoping to go sometime this year too, in the campervan. 1y
vlwelser I just went to Edinburgh and my favorites were high tea at Edinburgh Castle, The Real Mary King's Close, and the Palace at Holyrood. We also did a day trip to Stirling which was easy to get to on the train. Lonely Planet guides for sure. 1y
wanderinglynn @vlwelser thanks! I‘ve added those to my list. And I‘ll definitely check out the LP guide. 1y
Lucy_Anywhere Edinburgh and Glasgow are great places to base yourself! Lots of day trips to Stirling, St Andrews, and you can even venture into Northumberland as well. Barters Books in Alnwick is a fab secondhand bookshop in an old train station 1y
Oryx I love the west coast, and I prefer Mull over Skye if you want to visit an island. For cities, Edinburgh is beautiful (visit Mary's Close and Toppings bookshop). 1y
wanderinglynn @Lucy_Anywhere thanks, especially for the bookstore suggestions! 1y
wanderinglynn @oryx thank you! 1y

🎉 🎉On this day in 1925 an Act of Parliament established a public legal deposit library for Scotland, separated from the private Faculty of Advocates and the National Library of Scotland was born. Happy 94th birthday to us! 🎉 🎉
