Listening to some more history today while engaging in a modern take on a prehistoric activity. "The fragile peace of the united Israel lasted barely a hundred years." Sheesh.

"And so the land between the two rivers entered a dark age. And for a hundred years or so, no history emerges from the blackness." The thing that strikes me most about ancient history is how casually a hundred years of brutality gets passed by. Generations lived and died; my whole life so far isn't even half of that time period. But it's also somehow comforting; humans find a way. Always.

This was my favorite book that I read in 2016!!! I listened it on #audio, which may have helped me get more out of it. SWB provides incredible insight into civilization's earliest times & provided clarity on the history-repeats-itself adage. Excellent context for understanding macro-historical trends in the present-day. I'd highly recommend it with (#pairwith) any good white wine. I listen to this audiobook whenever I need to relax--dental appointments, stressful flights, or, like now, sleepless nights. I've heard the first few hours of this book at least ten times. The history of the world is surprisingly soothing. Do other people have any audiobooks they use this way? (By the way, the book is great-- I just need to get it in hard copy so I can finally finish it!)

This worked as a great read aloud. Yes, sometimes we got bogged down by names, but overall, a lot was learned and the kids found themselves recognizing historical references and content everywhere. Onward to History of the Medieval World: From the Conversion of Constantine to the First Crusade. #homeschool #historyrocks

So here's a great nonfiction rec.
This big book covers ancient history as far back as it reliably can.
The chapters are short. There are TONS of great maps. Timelines continuing the story and comparing to other regions at the same time are VERY helpful.
The only thing missing is that it doesn't touch on the Western Hemisphere at all. I suspect that's because of a dearth of records.

This was a really fantastic thorough recap of history, told in a way that keeps your interest and holds it for the entirety of the book.
