Addlands: A Novel | Tom Bullough
4 posts | 2 read | 8 to read
A complex family with a tortured secret, the Hamers live on a large homestead in Radnorshire, Wales. Idris, the unbending patriarch and tyrant of the family, is a man suspicious of any change. Etty, his indomitable wife, is a woman born into a world unequipped to deal with her. Oliver, their only son, is a junior boxing champion turned hellraising local legend. A novel concerned both with the huge changes of 20th-century rural life, and that life in its eternal details.

Set in rural Wales, Tom Bullough's "Addlands" is reminiscent of Willam Faulkner's "As I Lay Dying." The novel follows the troubled Hamer family through many generations from 1941-2011.

A novel set on a Welsh farm. Farm novels just might be my cup of tea. I am a (Saskatchewan) farmer's son but mostly stayed inside reading Nancy Drew & playing with dolls there. Anyway, whenever I read a farm novel it usually speaks pretty deeply to me.
