3 posts | 12 read | 3 to read
The fortieth anniversary edition of Ian McEwan's first book, now with an introduction from the author Forty years on from first publication, these stories display McEwanâe(tm)s dazzling early talent. Taut, brooding and densely atmospheric, they are stories of sex and loneliness, adolescence and incest, love and murder, and they linger in the mind long after they are finished. This special edition includes a piece by the author on how he came to write First Love, Last Rites and rare archive material including manuscript pages, early publicity material and the cover of the first edition.

Bailedbailed

I made it halfway through this collection of short stories before having to bail on it out of pure disgust. In this debut collection of McEwan‘s short stories, he explores relationships, but not in a wholesome feel good way. Instead he looks at the darker aspects like rape, pedophilia and murder. I just couldn‘t get on board with what he was doing. #AuthorAMonth #AuthorAMonth2020

I was pretty close to not finishing this. This collection of short stories explored different aspects of relationships. But the darker, weird, horrible parts like rape, domestic abuse, disturbing family relationships, and the meaninglessness of the society. A very nihilistic collection, one whose purpose eludes me. #AuthorAMonth

Pickpick

Perfect palate cleansers in between novels. And great glimpses of early Ian McEwan. Like all short story collections, some are better than others, of course. But I didn't bail on any of them.
