Black Milk
Black Milk: On Motherhood and Writing | Elif Shafak
7 posts | 9 read | 12 to read
Black Milk is the affecting and beautifully written memoir on motherhood and writing by Turkey's bestselling female writer Elif Shafak, author of Honour, The Gaze and The Bastard of Istanbul which was long-listed for the Orange prize. Postpartum depression affects millions of new mothers every year, and- like most of its victims- Elif Shafak never expected to be one of them. But after the birth of her first child in 2006, the internationally bestselling Turkish author remembers how "for the first time my adult life . . . words wouldn't speak to me". As her despair finally eased, Shafak sought to resuscitate her writing life by chronicling her own experiences. In her intimate memoir, she reveals how she struggled to overcome her depression and how literature provided the salvation she so desperately needed. 'An intimate, affecting memoir . . . Her passion for literature is contagious, and her struggle with postpartum depression and writer's block reinforces how carefully all of us must tread. Beautifully rendered, Shafak's Black Milk is an epic poem to women everywhere' Colleen Mondor Elif Shafak is the acclaimed author of The Bastard of Istanbul and The Forty Rules of Love and is the most widely read female novelist in Turkey. Her work has been translated into more than thirty languages. She is a contributor for The Telegraph, Guardian and the New York Times and her TED talk on the politics of fiction has received 500 000 viewers since July 2010. She is married with two children and divides her time between Istanbul and London.

In "Black Milk" every woman will recognize her moments of doubt, weakness and audacity. Women are mothers, activists, pioneers, artists and muses. It is not easy to combine the requirements of nature, mind and soul. When one dish on the scales weighs down, the other remains light, disembodied, and doubt settles in it. Elif Shafak meets us with writers from all times and from different parts of the world. We should live the way we dream, I think.

This book is underrated.
It was magnificently written, with depth, elegant vulnerability, and open to the core.
Wild with imagination , yet aware of every idea, and separates the ego from the pure self.
Women, Mothers, and.. Men should read this.

Highly recommend.

The future library is a time capsule where one writer a year is chosen to write an unpublished book and add it to this "library" and it will be released sometime in the future. How FABULOUS is that♡♡♡

#ReadingResolutions Day 25: This was my #BeachRead while we were in Maldives two years ago - where I celebrated my 40th birthday. I still long for this place, and wish we could return this year. My teenage daughter‘s #BeachRead is clearly different from mine, which was a fascinating take on how female writers navigate their way around creativity, motherhood, and womanity.

#MarchIntoReading Day 15: #ShePersisted. Read this exactly a year ago when I was in Maldives, eating the most exquisite homemade banana balls, a local delicacy. At the very essence of this memoir is Elif‘s existential query about whether she can remain a writer while being a mother – does one have to be sacrificed in favour of the other?
