Was She Pretty?
Was She Pretty? | Leanne Shapton

A SINGULAR EXPLORATION OF MODERN LOVE AND ALL ITS DEMONS, IN WORDS AND DRAWINGSIn this brilliant gem of a book, artist/writer Leanne Shapton weaves together a voyeuristic tale of love and life through epigrammatic vignettes and sleek line drawings. Entire relationships are encapsulated in a few, stingingly perfect lines: "Colleen was Walter's ex-girlfriend from med school. She loved to dance with men at weddings." Pricking our insecurities, Shapton introduces us to Kim, whose ex "kept a drawerful of love letters in a kitchen drawer . . . She would stare at it while she cooked." And Ben's ex, "a physiotherapist for the U.S. men's and women's Olympic swim teams. She wore small white shorts year-round."Fascinated by her own jealousy, Shapton interviewed acquaintances about their anxieties and peccadilloes, and the result is a book of surpassing originality: one of those unusual books that comes along to delight us all, like An Exaltation of Larks or Love, Loss, and What I Wore or Griffin and Sabine. Was She Pretty? can also share the shelf with the work of the legendary William Steig, whose early, psychologically revealing work inspired Shapton. An unflinching observer of human behavior, she invites us to peer into the hearts and minds of her characterswhile reminding us that we shouldn't be surprised if we see ourselves staring right back.

Pickpick

The premise of Shapton‘s short book is that everybody has an ex and everybody‘s been an ex. After discovering pictures of her boyfriend‘s ex in his apartment, she decided to interview friends and ask “What qualities did they have that their replacements didn‘t? And vice versa?” This book is the result. The art work is simple, but works perfectly.

Aleksandra It‘s funny that you picked to take a picture of that page, I speak Polish! 😂 6y
Lacythebookworm @Aleksandra Do you have an ex named Monty?! 😂 6y

Pickpick

A study of the curiosity of your partner's exes. An illustration on one page, a sentence or short paragraph on the opposite page. Simple, yet it's made me think much more than anything I've read recently. Leanne Shapton's work belongs on my bookshelf.

Three graphic novels I've really enjoyed on being young and figuring out your place in the world. #startswithuvw #marchintorreading

Mehso-so

This is an odd book, a bit experimental and unconventional. Basically, like an afternoon spent gossiping with your friends about their exes. Extremely heterosexual though one bi woman is mentioned so representation is skewed. This was okay.

Mehso-so

Came across this graphic novel at my fave bookstore today. I read it in about 20 minutes while waiting on the status of some books I brought in to their trade desk. It was funny, weird, sad, and not really any of that. I guess it was just meh. If you're super cultured and hella artsy, put it on your coffee table. If you aren't, pass it up... or read it at the bookstore like I did.

courtney Haha! I checked this one out for the library once, carted in home in a stack of like 15 other books, read it in less than 20 mins like you and was like "....oh." 7y
OneLitChick @courtney bahahaha! Glad I'm not the only one! 7y
