When the Beat Was Born
When the Beat Was Born: DJ Kool Herc and the Creation of Hip Hop | Laban Carrick Hill
3 posts | 6 read | 4 to read
Before there was hip hop, there was DJ Kool Herc. On a hot day at the end of summer in 1973 Cindy Campbell threw a back-to-school party at a park in the South Bronx. Her brother, Clive Campbell, spun the records. He had a new way of playing the music to make the breaksthe musical interludes between verseslonger for dancing. He called himself DJ Kool Herc and this is When the Beat Was Born. From his childhood in Jamaica to his youth in the Bronx, Laban Carrick Hill's book tells how Kool Herc came to be a DJ, how kids in gangs stopped fighting in order to breakdance, and how the music he invented went on to define a culture and transform the world.

#HeatOfJuly Day 7: DJ Kool Herc has created a lot of #PartyRockAnthem as he paved the way for the birth of hiphop. His inspiration was a guy named DJ King George who liked to throw house parties in the neighborhood. Full review: https://gatheringbooks.org/2016/02/10/nonfiction-wednesday-when-the-beat-was-bor...

first person account witnessing the very early days of hip hop and rap music by watching the kids in Bronx, NY. includes bibliography, author's note and timeline from 1973-1986. glaring oversight that no women of rap or hip hop are mentioned either in the story or timeline.

Megabooks Pretty darn glaring!!! Still sounds awesome, though. 4y
