Imaginary Friends
Imaginary Friends: A Novel | Alison Lurie
3 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
Two sociologists infiltrate a cult from which madness might be the only escape Once the nations most popular sociologist, Tom McMann has fallen out of style lately. Desperate for a last shot at relevance, he targets the Truth Seekers, an up-and-coming cult that seems destined for the big time. An irresistible mixture of New Age cranks and sci-fi nerds, they are ruled over by Verena, a beautiful young telepath who believes she has a hotline to another planet. The Seekers are isolated, committed, and eccentric, but most importantly, theyre hiring. Assisted by his wide-eyed young colleague, Roger Zimmern, McMann infiltrates the Truth Seekers, hoping to see how the zealots respond if questioned by someone within their midst. But when Verenas babblings start to make a little too much sense, the researchers must choose between losing their minds and buying one-way tickets to outer space. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Alison Lurie including rare images from the authors collection.

I gave up at 33%. This was a first for me—an Allison Lurie book that bored me to tears. I usually love her novels.

Maybe I'm weird, but I never had any imaginary friends. I was fine keeping myself entertained, but I never felt the need to create imaginary playmates to join in.

I found the episode, Imaginary Friend, to be kind of lackluster, too neatly tied up with a talk from Picard to Isabella. Not much of a menace.

cobwebmoth I had imaginary friends as a kid, but they weren't very original. They were The Brady Bunch. I would make my mom set extra places at the table for Marsha and Greg.😄 5y
Megabooks @cobwebmoth That sounds like me! My imaginary friends were the Star Trek crew, and we were always doing obstacle courses. 🤷🏻‍♀️😁 5y
audraelizabeth I never had any either. I just usually read or played by myself. 5y
Reggie My dad took me to see the Sixth Sense one weekend when I was visiting from college. He told me that he related to that kid because when he was younger everyone thought he had an imaginary friend while he thought he had a real friend nobody could see. At first I thought he might be joking but he never said just kidding. He said the boy just one day never came back. 5y
