The Shambling Guide to New York City
The Shambling Guide to New York City | Mur Lafferty
10 posts | 21 read | 6 to read
A travel writer takes a job with a shady publishing company in New York, only to find that she must write a guide to the city - for the undead! Because of the disaster that was her last job, Zoe is searching for a fresh start as a travel book editor in the tourist-centric New York City. After stumbling across a seemingly perfect position though, Zoe is blocked at every turn because of the one thing she can't take off her resume --- human. Not to be put off by anything -- especially not her blood drinking boss or death goddess coworker -- Zoe delves deep into the monster world. But her job turns deadly when the careful balance between human and monsters starts to crumble -- with Zoe right in the middle.

Among many other things, I've been reading this lately, especially when I'm in the mood for something a little lighter. Like during my lunch hour on a very busy work day!

Bailedbailed

I hate to bail on this, because I really like the premise, but I find the main character, Zoe, very annoying and whiny. Also, why does the author use the word "jolt" so much? No one is just surprised, they're jolted. That annoyed me, and I wasn't going to let this ruin my Christmas. Maybe it was a bad idea to go from one book about magical NYC to another with a similar theme??

Megabooks Sometimes I have trouble reading even vaguely similar books back-to-back. Maybe put it in the try again in a few months pile?? 5y

If you like Buddy the Vampire Slayer/supernatural fiction then check this one out! Girl gets a new job after moving back home. Girl finds out monsters exist. Girl helps discover a sinister plot against the city and tries to figure it all out. I don't want to give anything away so I won't say anymore except pick this book up!

I really enjoyed this. Okay, it reminded me of a whole bunch of other urban fantasies, but I liked the humour and I blew through it in a matter of hours.

Brilliant wee beach read. Can't believe it's taken me so long to finally read this. Fun, lighthearted urban fantasy. More excited for Ghost Train to New Orleans though as New Orleans is on my bucket list - partly because of its association with the occult and such - so sounds good to me 👍

Nerd party!! Book and puzzle (and I can't focus on either one right now for some reason).
