A great installment in the Bruno, Chief of Police series. This one from 2010. Fascinating details of the Périgueux truffle trade, including how talented Gigi is as a locator of the black diamonds.

Add in historical details of the French in Vietnam, and current violence between Chinese and Vietnamese triads, and some human trafficking, and you have a great rip-roaring read.

Wonderful food, of course, abounds.

Well-ReadNeck Have you read The Truffle Underground? It‘s fascinating and you might like it on the heels of this one! 4y
Sparklemn Sounds like a great series. I‘ll give it a try. 4y

St. Denis is the setting, Bruno is Chief of Police in this french Perigord region. There is trouble at the truffle market, the sawmill is closing, there are the descriptions of cooking for a fabulous hunter‘s wake and there is a feud between the Vietnamese and Chinese involving locals and an evil slave trade. All while we get descriptions of daily life including rugby games, Christmas parties and the sights, smells and tastes of the Dordogne.4⭐️

An enjoyable read. If you are a lover of all things French , particularly the food, you might enjoy this. I just read a Donna Leon book for book club. I found this read similar. She writes about Venice in a similar way he writes about France.

Crazeedi @Jeg great minds!!!! You just mentioned my 2 favorite series! I love Leon-have read every one of her Brunetti books, and I'm currently devouring Walkers Bruo series, I'm just getting ready to read book 4! The characters, the food, the development of story-❤❤ 5y

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Book 3 and the best one so far. Bruno has to solve the mystery of inferior truffles being sent to market. And also why the Viet and Chines immigrants are killing each other. Add a dash of French wine, cooking and Bruno's love life to the mix and you have the ingredients for a marvelous story!

CarolynM I read the first one of these but never got any further. It sounds like I should try some more🙂 (edited) 5y
Crazeedi @CarolynM I find with most series they get better as you go, character development and such. The story seems to get fuller if you know what I mean. This one was my favorite so far 5y
CarolynM Yes, that's often the way. I liked the one I read, I don't know why I didn't go on to the next one. Just got distracted by something else, I guess. 5y

When I join my husband on the couch after dinner, I usually have a book to read just in case...we have a “tradition” of watching nightly news together, then some nights, different other news shows. He is an ex-reporter so he does not tire of domestic/world news. (unlike his wife who needs to escape into a book some nights).
