This Savage Song
This Savage Song | Victoria Schwab
Theres no such thing as safe in a city at war, a city overrun with monsters. In this dark urban fantasy from acclaimed author Victoria Schwab, a young woman and a young man must choose whether to become heroes or villainsand friends or enemieswith the future of their home at stake. The first of two books, This Savage Song is a must-have for fans of Holly Black, Maggie Stiefvater, and Laini Taylor.Kate Harker and August Flynn are the heirs to a divided citya city where the violence has begun to breed actual monsters. All Kate wants is to be as ruthless as her father, who lets the monsters roam free and makes the humans pay for his protection. All August wants is to be human, as good-hearted as his own father, to play a bigger role in protecting the innocentbut hes one of the monsters. One who can steal a soul with a simple strain of music. When the chance arises to keep an eye on Kate, whos just been kicked out of her sixth boarding school and returned home, August jumps at it. But Kate discovers Augusts secret, and after a failed assassination attempt the pair must flee for their lives. In This Savage Song, Victoria Schwab creates a gritty, seething metropolis, one worthy of being compared to Gotham and to the four versions of London in her critically acclaimed fantasy for adults, A Darker Shade of Magic. Her heroes will face monsters intent on destroying them from every sideincluding the monsters within.

Deplorable human acts create monsters. The worse the act (ie, mass murder), the worse kind of monster is created. How does the world devolve when this happens? Perhaps you learn to control the monsters for your own deplorable reasons. Two heroes arise, one, ironically, the worst kind of monster to fight the human monsters & the real monsters. Infinitely readable. 5 ⭐️ Unfortunately book 2 is sold out & going in a second printing now! #authoramonth

I‘ll read the next book for sure. I liked this one okay! I think I was distracted and it took me too long to read. Maybe would have liked it better if I wasn‘t so stressed and in grad school!

One day in and I‘m almost one-quarter through the book. It‘s hard to put down. At this rate I‘ll be finished in a few days (work and life permitting). I hope it stays this compulsively readable to the end. #authoramonth

TracyReadsBooks I really liked this book but I liked the sequel even more! These days, Schwab is an automatic buy for me. 3mo
Texreader @Mommamanzi @TracyReadsBooks Yea I‘m there with you now! Less than 100 pages to go. It‘s addictive. I‘ll be heading to the bookstore this weekend for the sequel. 3mo

I first read this back when it came out in 2016 and it is the book that got me hooked on Victoria/V.E. Schwab. Thankfully a reread of book held up as I still love this story, the world and characters that Victoria created. #AuthorAMonth #BookspinBingo #Scarathlon2021 #TeamHendrix #Screamathon #Wickedathon #BFC2021 +351 pts

Such a great story and rich characters! August Flynn and Kate Harker have a few things in common, but from different perspectives-Kate wants to be a ruthless monster like her father, while August wishes to be more human...These two and their quests will keep your heart racing!

Took me a while to get through this one, but I really enjoyed it. I loved the worldbuilding, the action and darkness, and of course, the characters. I think part of it was a little dragged out, but I‘ll definitely pick up the sequel.

I have consistently liked V. E. Schwab books, and although this read a little differently than her other works I‘ve gone thru, I enjoyed it! The universe was great, and the development of Kate and her dad‘s relationship was interesting (a bit simple, but it left me satisfied, as there were other plot lines to delve into).

I loved this! I don‘t know if it‘s classified as middle grade or YA, but it‘s a dark fantasy/horror monster story. I love the twisting of who qualifies as a monster, and how they are created by the evils of men. Also there‘s no romance, which I think is great. Terrific main female and male characters. I‘ll definitely be reading book 2.

🎧 A city at war. Kate, a human & August, a monster (monsters created by hate) are heirs to the 2 opposing city leaders. They‘re opposites. August wants to be human so when he‘s given the opportunity to go undercover to follow Kate at her latest boarding school he jumps at the chance. His weapon is a violin. She is a ruthless killer & discovers his secret. There‘s more going on beneath the surface. I liked the MC‘s & premise. YA & dark ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

While this book has great world building, great diverse characters, and trauma galore, the story fell flat for me at the end. Wonder if I built it up too high as I read it myself. I love August wanting to be human, not a monster. Loved Kate wanting to be a ruling monster like he dad, not really human. The mystery. Whines everything made sense, but there wasn‘t enough action that the book was building up to. Knowing there is a sequel helps a lot

blurb
Bookish_Gal
This Savage Song | V.E Schwab
post image

Halfway feel; the story is taking its time building up. There‘s so much going on in the background, though, that this buildup seems warranted. Story is doing well showing both city sides are villainous. So now they have really met up, though Kate knows August is a monster. Both are on the run with someone or something that was trying to frame August for the (almost) murder of Kate

quote
Bookish_Gal
This Savage Song | V.E Schwab

August stood, staring, trying to understand what made men break like this. Not in a physical way - human bodies were brittle - but heart and soul, would make them jump, fall, even when they knew there was no ground beneath.

quote
Bookish_Gal
This Savage Song | V.E Schwab

But the teacher had been right about one thing: Violence breeds. Someone pulls a trigger, sets off a bomb, drives a bus full of tourists off a bridge, and what‘s left in the wake isn‘t just shell casings, wreckage, bodies. There‘s something else. Something bad. An aftermath. A recoil. A reaction to all that anger and pain and death. That‘s all the Phenomenon was really, a tipping point.

blurb
Bookish_Gal

post image

So we got Kate; burning down every prep school church she is sent to so she can get her dads attention and come home. And we got August; who wants to help in the task force in their divided city. Both have an affinity to music

Plenty of people are monstrous, and plenty of monsters know how to play at being human. I think I‘m going to enjoy this dark book about who is the villain and who is the hero in a city that makes it hard to differentiate them.

This book was written so well. I loved the different POVs. I am really nervous to go into the second book because I don‘t want it to turn into a romantic kind of book. I feel like the characters just don‘t need that. Anyways, I loved this book and I just started the sequel. 7/10

1. Lila from A Darker Shade of Magic is my most recent dislike but my all time least favorite would probably be Bella from Twilight.
2. I love clean, fresh, and soft floral scents. Rain, fresh laundry, lavender and hibiscus are some of my favorites
3. This savage song, the host and insatiable.

#28 and finally gonna crack this one open. I can‘t wait till we get more ADSOM by her 🥰 her writing style is out of this world. I can‘t wait for all of the things to come by her, if you haven‘t read her work do yourself a favor and pick up one of her books ASAP!

Caffeinated_Reader Her books have quickly become some of my most favorite. The words she uses and the images she paints are magical and vivid. I love the sentences she strings together. I loved the character Ilsa so much. 2y
Caffeinated_Reader The way she described being able to “feel the cracks” and not knowing if they were “out there or inside of herself” and that just blew my mind way open. I felt that so deeply. That whole 3 pages I read like 4 times. Brilliant writing. I can‘t wait to read the next book! 2y
