The Deepest Blue
The Deepest Blue: Tales of Renthia | Sarah Beth Durst
13 posts | 12 read | 26 to read
The natural magic of the classic The Island of the Blue Dolphins meets the danger and courage of The Hunger Games in this dazzling, intricate stand-alone fantasy novel set in award-winning author Sarah Beth Dursts beloved world of Renthia. Life is precious and precarious on the islands of Belene. Besieged by a capricious ocean full of malicious spirits, the people of the islands seek joy where they can. Mayara, one of the islands fearless oyster divers, has found happiness in love. But on the day of her wedding to the artist Kelo, a spirit-driven storm hits the island with deadly force. To save her loved ones, Mayara reveals a dangerous secret: she has the power to control the spirits. When the storm ends, she is taken into custody by the queens soldiers and imprisoned with other women like her. They vary in age and social status, but to many they are heroes who will aide the country or witches that will sacrifice themselves trying. No matter who they are, the women are sent to a terrifying placean island filled with bloodthirsty nature spirits, and left without food, water, shelter, or any tools except their own instincts and magic. Whoever survives the Island of Testing will be declared heirs to the queen. But no matter if she wins or loses, Mayara knows that the life she dreamed of is gone.

I honestly love how this whole world ALWAYS seems to focus on the relationship of children with their parents and family as a whole. I really loved getting a new political structure and conflict while seeing a new type or structure of the spirits. This world just continued to get fleshed out and developed and BETTER with each book.

This is like a slightly (but only slightly) more adult version of the Hunger Games. In both the good and bad ways. It‘s exciting and interesting, with strong female characters who have more bravery and ingenuity than they originally thought they had. It also feels a little young in terms of the tone and language used. Overall, I enjoyed it, but I‘m not sprinting out to buy the next one.

“Death always lurks around _every_ corner,” Lady Garnah said, steel in her voice. “You can die for arbitrary, stupid reasons just as easily as you can die in a grand gesture. The key is how you live before that moment.”

This stand alone novel takes place in the world of Renthia, the setting for Durst's Queens series. There were a few details that nagged at me early on, but I was ultimately lost in the world building and characters. I have not read the Queens series, but I don't feel it lessened my enjoyment. I will be adding that series to my TBR. I've included a pic of one of my fave reading spots--my front porch rustic bench. #fantasy #whereiread #onceuponabook

I don‘t read a whole lot of fantasy, but when I saw “Island of the Blue Dolphins meets The Hunger Games” as the description, I was in. And I enjoyed this book, finding the description fairly apt. And I really enjoyed the process of opening the gifts along with the book from Once Upon a Bookclub. I‘ll post a pic of the unwrapped gifts next under a spoiler tag.

Ashley_Nicoletto I picked this up because of that description as well. 🤣🤣 5y
Soubhiville I can‘t believe Greta let you get the picture! Sietje hates when I try to lean books against her. Lol, cute. 5y
Hooked_on_books @Soubhiville She‘s so forgiving! I could never do this with Bindi. 5y
