Revolting Prostitutes
Revolting Prostitutes: The Fight for Sex Workers' Rights | Molly Smith, Juno Mac
5 posts | 5 read | 10 to read
How the law harms sex workersand what they want instead Do you have to endorse prostitution in order to support sex worker rights? Should clients be criminalized, and can the police deliver justice? In Revolting Prostitutes, sex workers Juno Mac and Molly Smith bring a fresh perspective to questions that have long been contentious. Speaking from a growing global sex worker rights movement, and situating their argument firmly within wider questions of migration, work, feminism, and resistance to white supremacy, they make it clear that anyone committed to working towards justice and freedom should be in support of the sex worker rights movement.

So clear, concise, and important! Easy and accessible language for an enraging topic. This book is so much more than I expected, and it talks abt capitalist, borders, policies and laws, feminism, and a ton more. Recommend it to absolutely anyone!

Reggie This topic has been on my mind because of Matt Gaetz who I loathe. However that doesn‘t erase the fact that the media has been on this he paid for sex angle which in the state of Florida is illegal. But what the media should do is pivot and talk about decriminalizing sex work. The places where it is legal has lower rates of StD infections. They have better access to healthcare. Human trafficking is less likely to happen. The irony here is that the 3y
Reggie party that Gaetz belongs to is the focus on the family party, the one with the “morals.” They say prostitution is bad but they keep getting caught with sex workers. Just like when they vote against lgbt rights but get caught in the restroom trying to hookup with other guys. Sorry, just needed to vent. The hypocrisy is too much sometimes. 3y
Nalbuque No worries, vent all you want! Spesh when we‘re in agreement 😅 but seriously, if you‘re interested in the topic, this book goes above and beyond! 3y

This book was not what I expected, but it delivered an argument I didn‘t know I needed to hear 👏🏼 Will be recommending this to all of my friends. The authors, who have experience in sex work, make a point NOT to argue about what sex work ~means~, but to instead argue how best to protect the rights of sex workers and where mainstream feminism has failed to protect or empower. Powerful, well-organized work.

Leftcoastzen Looks interesting. When I lived in San Francisco & was made aware of the sex workers Union there it made me look at my preconceived notions about the work & the people involved. 3y

Such a great book. It was not what I was expecting but a very convincing and we'll researched argument.

I learned a lot with this one. Mostly that I know nothing. It turns out many laws designed to "protect" prostitutes actually mostly make them less safe instead. It is interesting how horrible we as a society can be to marginalized people. I also learned there are more different types of feminists than I realized. Not all of them seem to believe everyone is equal in value after all. That is so sad. Our world needs more empathy and less judgement.

charl08 Have you come across Banyard's book?- I wondered if they acknowledge her crit at all. I will stack your one - such a difficult issue. 4y
bookishbitch @charl08 I have not see that one. Will have to check it out. Thanks for the heads up. 4y

Current pile in progress, not counting two others on my kindle. It's weird that I have some memory deficit, and yet can read many books at once and keep them all straight.
