Coney Island of the Mind [With CD] (Anniversary)
Coney Island of the Mind [With CD] (Anniversary) | Lawrence Ferlinghetti
10 posts | 12 read | 1 reading | 4 to read
The title of this book is taken from Henry Miller's "Into the Night Life" and expresses the way Lawrence Ferlinghetti felt about these poems when he wrote them during a short period in the 1950's - as if they were, taken together, a kind of Coney Island of the mind, a kind of circus of the soul.

The tagged book was one of the first poetry books I ever bought. It helped launch my love for poetry. I often reread Ferlinghetti in my 20s, I always appreciated his surreal imagery, humor, tenderness, & social protest. The importance of City Lights Books in mid-20th century publishing & the formation of counterculture lit can't be overstated. He was the last of his generation. A true icon.

KVanRead Such sad news, but man what a life! 3y
vivastory @KVanRead Completely agree! I was expecting it any day, but def still saddened by it. Last of the beats... 3y
Leftcoastzen 😢a favorite of mine , I said hello to him once at City Lights upstairs poetry room ,think his office was there? 3y

vivastory @Leftcoastzen Really? That's incredible! I don't know if you've read Philip Lamantia, but I was able to interview him for about an hour in 1999. I remember when he hung up he said he was planning on meeting City Lights employees & his ex-wife Nance Peters (co-owner of City Lights) for lunch 3y
Leftcoastzen Love Philip Lamantia ! Must have been great to interview him! 3y
vivastory @Leftcoastzen I was pretty star struck tbh, he was one of my fave living poets when I spoke with him & he was very gracious. It was right around the time that Neeli Cherkovski had released his collection of interviews “Whitman's Wild Children“ & I was very self-aware to not ask him any of the same questions that Cherkovski had 😂 3y
arubabookwoman I purchased the tagged book (as well as a couple of others by Ferlinghetti) on my first visit to City Lights in the summer of 1969. It was quite small then, and Ferlinghetti was sitting in the back reading while we (my now husband-it will be our 50th anniversary in May) browsed. Since he seemed so “old” then, when the rule was don‘t trust anyone over 30, I was surprised to learn on my last visit 5 or 6 yrs ago that he was still living. RIP 3y
SamAnne Oh. Now I get the City Light Books references on Litsy. RIP 3y

vivastory In 1999 I looked his number up online & called him. He talked on the phone for an hour, I remember he said he had to go meet Nancy Peters (I think she still runs City Lights) & one of the head booksellers at CL. It was amazing. 5y
PaperbackPirate I got to visit City Lights for the second time last Friday. It was awesome but it would have been nice to go to the bday bash. 5y
tpixie @SoniaC and I were just at City Lights about one month ago & got to watch the Chinese New Year Parade ! 5y
tpixie @vivastory wow! Quite the story!! Which would not have happened if you didn‘t give it a go!! 5y
arubabookwoman Wow-is he still alive? Amazing! I first went to City Lights in 1969. It was quite small, and Ferlinghetti was sitting in a back corner reading. I bought 2 slim volumes of his poetry, which I still have. 5y

@LazyDays

Only a mention of wind but one of my favorite poems. Plus, another favorite wind poem: Construction Site, Windy Night by Nicholas Christopher was way too long to fit.

arubabookwoman I visited City Lights Bookstore in 1969. Ferlinghetti was sitting in a back corner reading (the store was very small then). I bought this book, which I still have. 6y
VioletBramble @arubabookwoman Wow, what a great memory. Ferlinghetti is my favorite Beat poet. I have the 50th anniversary edition with a CD of him reading the poems live with a band. 6y
Nute @arubabookwoman I love your memory of that 1969 bookstore visit.🧡 6y

"I am perpetually awaiting a rebirth of wonder."

Stopped at a little indie bookshop in Bisbee, AZ and picked up this bookmark featuring a few lines from one of my favorite poems.

Going along with @Liberty and #FunFriday favorite autographed books. I found this beauty in a used bookstore (not City Lights) and aside from the fact that I lurve the poetry of Lawrence Ferlinghetti, I like to imagine that the "Allen" it's to is Allen Ginsberg. I have no proof, but I don't care.

brendanmleonard Have you thought about appraising/dating this? I think they can do a lot of testing with the ink and such to nail down a date😄 8y
Bkwurm @brendanmleonard Good idea! 8y
