Using Indigenous storytelling traditions to subvert European folklore tropes, Vermette tells a story of a young girl lost in the woods, and the wolf who helps her find her way. I especially loved how the wolf encouraged the girl to find her own way: "take a deep breath. Close your eyes, then look. What do you see?" A wonderful way to explore a child's resilience and inner strength.

This children‘s #picturebook collaboration between two talented #Canadian Métis women is absolutely wonderful. The Red Riding Hood tale is turned upside down with a wolf who is a helping spirit, gently providing encouragement to a lost girl to rescue herself. The gorgeous art, contemporary setting and the extrinsic significance of the red dress (MMIW: Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women) add power to the underlying message. #AllAges

I will read anything written by Katherena Vermette and anything illustrated by Julie Flett, so I'm psyched that this book exists. This retelling of Red Riding Hood with the wolf as helper is a lovely read, with beautiful illustrations. Definitely recommended!
