"To teach how to live without certainty, and yet without being paralysed by hesitation, is perhaps the chief thing that philosophy, in our age, can still do for those who study it."

You know it's an old edition when it says...

Lcsmcat I have a few with that notice in them. 5y
8little_paws Oh wow! I've never seen this. 5y
speljamr How easily we forget in our time what it was like to have to ration things. 5y
readordierachel Whoa! Yes, something we don't think about now. 5y

Finally finished this beast! Sooo long and I definitely think I drifted away in the middle and understand the material after Descartes much less than the stuff before, but who genuinely understands Hegel anyway?

Autumnlong Truly! 😂 6y
Billypar Very nice! I have a shelf of Philosophy books from college that I probably read very little of for the courses that assigned them, but I refuse to get rid of them in the hopes that I'll get back to them 'one day' 🤓 6y
Emilymdxn @Autumnlong people who say they do are lying clearly 6y
Emilymdxn @Billypar I‘m trying to learn about philosophy in the aftermath of my literature degree but it‘s slow going 😕 6y

I‘m starting off my #25infive readathon challenge with my usual audiobook listening at work - I‘m spending most of today putting letters in envelopes so having some philosophy to keep me awake and help me feel like I‘m learning something is essential! About four hours of listening at work, then back to The Stolen Bicycle for the booker long list after my evening class!

Suet624 You‘re reminding me to read some Russell again. 6y

Making slow but steady progress on this monster of a book! I‘m really enjoying it and love the voice artist who‘s doing it. It makes me feel like I ought to read something on Muslim or middle eastern philosophy to balance out how European-centric this is - I know the clue is in the title that it‘s very western but I wanna find something to help my knowledge be more balanced

ptkpepe98 That book is a treasure!💞💞💞 6y
speljamr @ptkpepe98 I found it long ago at a Library sale. 6y
tournevis Ugh. The (not so very good) memories of my history of thought class back in 1992. 6y
annkuch13 I spy Darth Plagueis! That's still one of my favorites even though it's Legends. 6y

Really enjoying this classic, even if it is a bit outdated 😌

quote
AdrianRivi

"I saw eternity the other night,
Like a great ring of pure and endless light,
All calm, as it was bright;
And round beneath it, Time in hours, days, years,
Driven by the spheres
Like a vast shadow moved; in which the world
And all her train were hurled."

"You cannot step twice into the same river; for fresh waters are ever flowing in upon you."
