Justice League of America: The Nail: The Complete Deluxe Edition
Justice League of America: The Nail: The Complete Deluxe Edition | Alan Davis
4 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
In a fascinating alternate reality story of tiny accidents that cascade into cataclysmic disasters, writer/artist Alan Davis creates a world that never knew a Superman, and a Justice League that is about to face its greatest test of might and morality. All because of something as simple as a nail. Formed by the WorldÕs Greatest Heroes, the Justice League of America stands tall as the mightiest group of protectors Earth has to offer. Since the groupÕs founding, one hero above all others has stood as their inspiration, guiding light and moral center: Superman. Now imagine a world without the Man of Steel. Welcome to the alternate history of JLA: THE NAIL. Collects JLA: THE NAIL #1-3 and JLA: ANOTHER NAIL #1-3.

I love it when DC characters mention the abandoned warehouse thing.

I once set out to track the warehouse thing across every show on the CW, and OMG IT WAS SO MUCH WORK. Those DC shows are full. of. warehouses. You'll be unsurprised to hear that ARROW was once King of the Warehouses (my favourite is the one ACROSS FROM CITY HALL) but SUPERGIRL has pulled ahead by a huge margin thanks to the warehouse bar its characters frequent.

Like all the best AUs, THE NAIL is accessible to newer readers but offers lots of fun twists for people who know the source material really well. I've now read enough (and watched enough DC TV) that I got a big kick out of how Davis deploys the characters, and I'm eager to read more about the ones who're relatively new to me.

The second miniseries isn't as enjoyable, alas, but I still recommend this deluxe edition to anyone curious about DC.

Alan Davis on one of his goals with THE NAIL, which imagines a world where Superman wasn't found by the Kents. We don't talk enough about how reading comics is an acquired skill that requires different mental muscles than reading prose. This is why I recommend that people who're new to the medium start with UNDERSTANDING COMICS (tagged below), not with whichever popular title they've heard the most about.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk I got into comics right when DC was cranking out Elseworlds left and right so I have a ton and The Nail is one of the best. I‘ve still got the individual issues! The sequel, Another Nail, is not that great. 5y
xicanti @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I read the deluxe edition and Another Nail definitely bumped my rating down. 5y

It's too frickin cold to go out, so tonight's just a Monday. I cooked up some steelhead trout and started THE NAIL, which promises to be another great DC AU. #readinthenewyear
