Outer Order Inner Calm
Outer Order Inner Calm | Gretchen Rubin
'In my study of happiness, I've realised that, for most of us, outer order contributes to inner calm.' In the context of a happy life, a messy desk or a crowded wardrobe is a trivial problem - yet Gretchen Rubin found that getting control of our stuff makes us feel more in control of our lives. Ask yourself: DO I NEED IT? DO I LOVE IT? DO I USE IT? With 150 concrete clutter-clearing ideas, insights, strategies, and sometimes surprising tips, Gretchen tackles the key challenges of creating outer order by explaining how to 'make choices', 'create order', 'know yourself', 'cultivate useful habits' and, of course, how to 'add beauty'. At home, at work, and in life, when we get our possessions under control, we can create a more serene environment. With a sense of fun, and a clear idea of what's realistic for most people, Gretchen suggests dozens of manageable steps to help us achieve the lives we yearn for. ***PRAISE FOR THE FOUR TENDENCIES*** 'There's something rather profound going on here: an advancing of self-knowledge, and mutual human understanding, which could surely be harnessed as a recipe for world peace' Daily Telegraph 'A genius' Guardian 'If you want to change anything in your life, you need Gretchen Rubin' Viv Groskop, journalist and Rebel 'I love Gretchen Rubin - she helps me understand both myself and the people around me' Cathy Rentzenbrink, Obliger and bestselling author of The Last Act of Love

I have read a lot of self-help type books, and I think this is one of the better ones. This is not because I believe in every concept in the book, because I don't, but I love the fact that there are tangible methods and solutions to decluttering and living a happier lifestyle. Who doesn't need a little inner calm during the busy holiday season! #mounttbr #wintergames2021 #teamgamesleighers #wrapitupreadathon #wintercosy #bfc21 #averymerryreadathon

This was a quick read, full of short pieces of advice about clearing the clutter of your life so you feel less stressed. I love Gretchen and her podcast, I'm giving this a so-so only because it was basically a repeat of things they've discussed in her podcast at length but with less explanation in the book, which was odd.
But it did inspire me to clear out my closet and donate clothes I never wear! Summer project 😎

peanutnine I'm still catching up on reviews from June! This was my #doublespin pick for the month. @TheAromaofBooks 3y

This audiobook helped me tackle some things around the house I've been neglecting for too long. It actually drove me to get through my piles and provided excellent motivation as I was going along. I felt the author's message was a little more attainable than some of the other "decluttering" books out there. I didn't sit down today, and I'm hoping I can keep the momentum going tomorrow as well! ???

Smartypants Thanks for sharing, you‘ve inspired me! 3y

This was a quick read that has actually inspired me to start tackling the clutter in my home, so I‘d count that as a win. I loved the pictured quote. It made sense, and I needed to hear it, since I tend to save my most special things to be used on some other more special day when I‘m more “deserving” of them, whatever that means. This tells me to use my good things, to wear them out. I deserve it! 💕

KVanRead That is a great sentiment. Like my mom always says, “You can‘t take it with you!” 4y

This was a great read to inspire me to be tidy now that most of us, myself included, are working from home. #covid19

LiteraryinLawrence At an educators event in February, Gretchen Rubin was the keynote speaker. She talked about the 4 tendencies for like an hour with no notes. She was great! 4y

I appreciate Gretchen Rubin's style even though this is probably not the most substantial decluttering book. I do like the very actionable points and her understanding of other people's tolerance to clutter and that it is not one size fits all.

Ok, so I actually finished this book a few weeks ago but forgot to post about it. (And if you don‘t post about it, it doesn‘t count, right? 😉)

I really like Gretchen and her work so I enjoyed this book. However, if you have read other things (books, blog posts, etc.) on this topic, then there really won‘t be anything new for you here. But it did motivate me to declutter and look at some of my stuff in a new way, just like I was hoping it would.

A great quick little book of tips and reminders on how and why we should tidy our spaces to tidy our minds. I'm feeling very motivated to get rid of ALL THE THINGS now.

My criticisms of this are similar to what I‘ve seen from others. There is nothing new here. I‘m a Gretchen Rubin fan generally, but this just seems like a blatant attempt to profit off of the current tidying/minimalism craze. I have read widely in this genre so nothing here is fresh, but I do think this could be a good, quick starting place for some people.

A small book to make you think about clutter...what it is, how you view it, how to tackle it. This is not a how-to, more philosophy than how-to. Recommend if you like thinking about what makes you, you and if you like Rubin's style.

Quick and light, this book gives some quick suggestions/ motivation to reset the home and office. I share classrooms with another teacher and have been pleasantly surprised at how well a few of her suggestions have improved the state of our materials- heavy classrooms (I teach engineering.) Nothing monumental in the book, but good advice!

I have always enjoyed Gretchen Rubin‘s books and philosophy. I‘m hoping this one encourages me to start spring cleaning. 💐🌷🌸🌺 I feel like a lot of this is common sense but, even so, I still don‘t make these habits. I definitely can use the reminders.
