The Mental Load
The Mental Load: Comics from the Front Lines of Women's Lives and Other Social Justice Issues | Emma
In her first book of comic strips, Emma reflects on social and feminist issues by means of simple line drawings, dissecting the mental load, i.e. all that invisible and unpaid organising, list-making and planning women do to manage their lives, and the lives of their family members. In her strips Emma deals with themes ranging from maternity leave (it is not a vacation!), domestic violence, the clitoris, the violence of the medical world on women during childbirth, and other feminist issues, and she does so in a straightforward way that is both hilarious and deadly serious.

This was a random stumble upon in the library book.
Overall it was a good book. Some chapters I didn't feel had much a feminist view to them though.
While it was written in French and translated, it fits for the most part in the US.

Interesting collection of comics that range from discussions on race, xenophobia, maternity leave, universal wages, police brutality and of course, the mental load.

Have you ever read a book that was only okay, but for what it was, it‘s good? That‘s how I feel about this one... I was hoping for more depth to the topics, but a compilation of comics might not be the best format for the depth I was wanting. Still, the information is well presented and digestible. This weekend was made better by the taste testing day we had, which hosted a few recommendations made by @Jilly6183

PerksOfBeingABookworm @Jilly6183 James, Sarah, and I agreed that TreeHouse was the best. But I also loved Citizen Cider and Article XV. I didn‘t wait around for our “taste testing day,” to try them, so Sarah and James just had to do without 🙈 5y
Jilly6183 Awesome! Glad you enjoyed them. Treehouse is pretty awesome. 🍻 5y
Eyelit I just finished this and I totally agree with your assessment 5y

I‘m saying this is a pick, but it‘s far from perfect. I really enjoyed the French perspective on these various topics. I also think the author did a nice job of breaking down the topics as well. I consider this more of a collection of illustrated essays rather than a graphic novel or comic (despite the title) and thought the translation was a bit clunky in spots. But definitely read it.

A very good feminist comic examining some of the worst aspects of our society's dismissiveness towards and lack of equality for women. Things are still far from fair. The inequality runs deep, but the only path to correction is being cognizant of the problem.

Weaponxgirl I found it really interesting getting a feminist view from France in this one and thought she was great at making complicated issues bite sized. 5y
TieDyeDude @Weaponxgirl She was very good at simplifying complicated ideas. I also appreciated the radical/militant feminist perspective 5y
Weaponxgirl @TieDyeDude sometimes I don‘t notice that as I‘ve been reading feminist books for so long. One area that hit me in this was about french police brutality in France. Being in the uk I forget that other European police forces have guns as a general rule. It‘s good to get an activists perspective on close countries location wise. 5y

Great book but I wish the chapters were a lot longer. I was interested until the very last page. I am looking forward to more work by her. 5 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽😉

This is a #womenintranslation that also goes in my #readharder2019 challenge.
I liked this and could see a teenager getting a lot out of how this is presented. If you read a lot of feminist books maybe not too much new in here but I found it particularly interesting for giving me info about feminism in France.
For Francophiles who think it‘s a perfect place this will be a strong kick back to reality.

MelissaSue81 Oh, I remember seeing some of these on the internet awhile back. Didn‘t realize there was a book made. Sounds interesting. 5y
Weaponxgirl @MelissaSue81 I missed her on the internet but couldn‘t resist this when I saw it. It‘s a quick read but has lots of info packed in as a starting place to explore more from. 5y
