We Rule the Night
We Rule the Night | Claire Eliza Bartlett
Two girls use forbidden magic to fly and fight--for their country and for themselves--in this riveting debut that's part Shadow and Bone, part Code Name Verity. Seventeen-year-old Revna is a factory worker, manufacturing war machines for the Union of the North. When she's caught using illegal magic, she fears being branded a traitor and imprisoned. Meanwhile, on the front lines, Linn defied her father, a Union general, and disguised herself as a boy to join the army. They're both offered a reprieve from punishment if they use their magic in a special women's military flight unit and undertake terrifying, deadly missions under cover of darkness. Revna and Linn can hardly stand to be in the same cockpit, but if they can't fly together, and if they can't find a way to fly well, the enemy's superior firepower will destroy them--if they don't destroy each other first. We Rule the Night is a powerful alternate-history fantasy about sacrifice, complicated friendships, and survival despite impossible odds.

Okay so I get the comparison to Code Name Verity but I'm totally failing to understand the Shadow and Bone comparison. I really liked that we got a main character who was physically disabled. She's very independent, genuine, smart, capable and so damn strong. I found the world building and political conflict to be REALLY lacking in development. The ending plot was also kind of unsatisfying and abrupt. It needed another 2 chapters at least.

AudiobookingWithLeah I totally agree with you on the world-building and political conflict lacking development. The magic system was confusing too. 5y

The inspiration behind this was really interesting and I love all the varying shades of women in this story.

Thanks @littlebrownyoungreaders for this free ARC for our #bookclub! 4/5 ⭐️s from me.

@bartlebett debut novel is full of adventure. Two girls from different circumstances both want to save their land in the war. The world building is very well done and I‘d classify this as both sci-fi and adventure. I also have no idea if this is the future or the past - interesting time period!

Will be great for #highschool readers!
