American Princess
American Princess: A Novel of First Daughter Alice Roosevelt | Stephanie Marie Thornton
21 posts | 15 read | 26 to read
Alice may be the president's daughter, but she's nobody's darling. The gum-chewing, cigarette-smoking, poker-playing First Daughter discovers that the only way for a woman to stand out in Washington is to make waves - oceans of them. When Alice falls hard for a smooth-talking congressman it will take everything this rebel has to emerge triumphant and claim her place as an American icon. As she soldiers through the devastation of two world wars, it's no wonder everyone in the capital refers to her as the Other Washington Monument - and Alice intends to outlast them all.

This book proved to me that my rule of sticking with a book for at least 100 pages before bailing works 👍 I couldn‘t stand Alice at first (“Waffling Women” in regards to men annoys me soooo much. If you love him, love him. If you don‘t, move on!) but I warmed up to her and her sense of humor and couldn‘t put this book down after the first 100 pages. Definitely recommend for any historical fiction fans!

jdiehr Okay, I bailed on this a long time ago. I'm sure I wasn't 100 pages in. Maybe I will give it another chance... 2y
Aims42 @jdiehr I can totally understand the bail ratings on this book and why you set it down. I wasn‘t expecting to ever like Alice, but she wore me down 😆 2y
rubyslippersreads Was she the one who said, “If you can‘t say anything nice, come sit by me”? 😂 2y
Aims42 @rubyslippersreads She is!! 🤣 Both her and her father (Theodore Roosevelt) had some awesome one liners 😆 2y

I really enjoyed learning more about Alice Roosevelt, since I didn't know much going in, but the timeline was so condensed that it was hard to keep up with at times, and some of the tropes were just stale, even if they were accurate. #historicalfiction

⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 out of 5 stars. Loved the historical aspects of it and loved learning more about Alice Roosevelt but I think the book sometimes skipped over moments of genuine emotion for the sake of getting to the next big historical event Alice was at. The woman did live until 96 so there was a ton of ground to cover! #historicalfiction #weekendreads

Been in a little bit of a reading rut but all of the ⛈⛈is wreaking havoc on my internet so I can‘t watch Gilmore Girls for the 10000 time. I am liking this book though so I‘m glad some outside forces pushed me to it! #weekendreads #quarantineblues #historicalfiction

There were times when I hated this book but it also managed to keep me up way past when I said I was going to sleep. I am still deciding how I truly feel about it but I did get the chance to learn a lot more about the other Roosevelt‘s starting with “Princess Alice”

I‘m addicted to historical fiction and this one didn‘t disappoint. It‘s a fast, fun read offering a lot of insight into Alice Roosevelt Longworth‘s life as a Washington, D.C. socialite and political force. Thornton did her research and dishes up the dirt on this enigmatic woman who would have held an office of her own if times were different then. I sympathized with her heartbreaks and rejoiced in her victories. All in all—a great read!

If you‘re a fan of historical fiction, this book chronicles very closely the real life of Alice Roosevelt. Fabulous look into her life as a President‘s daughter, and an inside look at Washington D.C. over a span of seven decades. Loved everything about it. I‘ll be reading this one again.

I was so scared about Thorton getting the voice of Alice right- she did wonderfully! This book just cemented Alice as my second favorite Roosevelt.

If you love historical fiction based on strong females, this is a must! It‘s a tad lengthy, but Alice Roosevelt Longworth lived such a colorful life, you won‘t mind. Thornton does a great job with the research and details at the end what she tweaked in the name of fiction. At times funny, at times sad...Alice struggles to be noticed by a famous father and to be loved by the man she loves. Thanks to #FirstToRead from Penguin for the ARC.
