An Elephant in My Kitchen
An Elephant in My Kitchen: What the herd taught me about love, courage and survival | Francoise Malby Anthony
16 posts | 7 read | 11 to read
"The most magical book about the African bush since Born Free." Daily Mail A blonde, chic Parisienne, Franoise never expected to find herself living on a South African game reserve. But when she fell in love with renowned conservationist Lawrence Anthony her life took an unexpected turn. Lawrence died in 2012 and Franoise was left to face the tough reality of running Thula Thula without him, even though she knew very little about conservation. She was short on money, poachers were threatening their rhinos, and one of their elephants was charging Land Rovers on game drives and terrifying guests. There was no time to mourn when Thula Thula's human and animal family were depending on her. How Franoise survived and Thula Thula thrived is beautifully described in this charming, funny and poignant book. Their elephant herd, rescued by Lawrence, shared Franoise's grief at his passing but over time forged a new relationship with her. One day a baby, Tom, became separated from the herd and found his way into Franoise's kitchen. Another day there was a desperate race against time to save a baby who had a snare wrapped round his face and couldn't open his mouth to suckle. Meanwhile Franoise fulfilled her dream of building a rescue centre for orphaned rhinos and other wildlife. Abandoned hippo baby Charlie, who hated water, joined the centre's rhinos and quickly became best friends with a little girl rhino called Makhosi. The traumatised babies had round the clock care, including an unlikely nursemaid in the form of a German Shepherd called Duma. If you loved Lawrence's The Elephant Whisperer, or just want to spend time with some very special animals, then you won't want to miss this sparkling book.

This is an emotional roller coaster; it‘s a follow up to The Elephant Whisperer. Lawrence Anthony‘s wife, Francoise, shares some stories of her life with him and how she carried on after his death. She loves her South African home and is passionate about animal conservation. She expanded their reserve by building a center for rhino orphans. For every heart warming story about her amazing animals, there‘s a heart wrenching story of evil poachers.

The tagged book is about efforts to save and protect endangered animals from poachers. Now I read there are poachers of critically endangered plants in Africa. Oh my gosh—what is wrong with these people? #readingAfrica2022 @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

The article is not about the tagged book, but it has the same subject matter—poaching.

BarbaraBB Horrible 💔 2y
wanderinglynn We have poaching problems in the U.S.—American gingseng, which grows in Appalachia. It‘s causing the National Park Service & U.S. Fish & Wildlife all sorts of problems. 2y

This is a beautiful book and horrible too. It‘s the story of a game reserve in South Africa trying desperately to save wildlife while fighting the growing professional and well-funded poachers. It‘s an extraordinarily hard read in that regard, so huge trigger warning. But it‘s a love story to animals as well. I loved it so much while also cringing from the horror stories. Highly recommended if you‘re well-warned. #readingafrica2022 #SouthAfrica

Texreader Top photo is of a baby hippo and baby rhino who became best friends in the reserve‘s orphanage. 2y
wanderinglynn Yes, those that work on these reserves in South Africa & Kenya risk their lives daily. The last stat I saw was in 10 years, 1500 reserve workers had been killed trying to protect these animals. 😢 And an elephant is killed about every 15 minutes. 😡 2y
Librarybelle I enjoyed reading the quotes you posted from the book! 2y
Texreader @wanderinglynn And in this book you learn the toll on rhinos and even vultures. Unbelievable and unbearable. 2y

I love the title of this chapter. The author is about to open her orphanage for baby animals who have lost their mamas.

So this poison doesn‘t hurt the rhinos but makes their horns useless on the black market. They are also microchipped and the poison can be detected by airport security. How brilliant!

GingerAntics That is brilliant!!! 2y
Texreader @GingerAntics Sadly it didn‘t work for a multitude of reasons 2y
GingerAntics @Texreader that‘s too bad. It sounded like an ingenious idea. I guess where there‘s a will, there is always a way. 2y

Almost every book I‘ve read so far for #readingafrica2022 has discussed Ubuntu. Here it is again. The author is from Paris.

Having just finished a marvelous book (tagged below) about an adorable penguin I‘m moving on to a book about an adorable baby (one-ton) rhino, and elephants, etc. in the tagged book. Am I just making excellent book choices or what? #readingafrica2022 #SouthAfrica @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

wanderinglynn This also sounds like a wonderful book.

A beautifully told story of having the courage to take hold of your dreams and learning to let go and truly live.
It left me feeling inspired and I'd recommend it to anyone. Plus, I love elephants ☺️

Malby-Anthony gives us a glimpse into the world of elephants, rhinos, and even a baby hippo. Parts of the story were heartbreaking (every instance with poachers made me so angry and teary), but overall this warmed my heart to read about the amazing people helping the animals and also the adorable animals themselves.

An amazing book I‘d recommend to everyone.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I have a real love for rhinos and was thrilled and devastated by events in this book. The conservationists and rangers on the front lines of the poaching epidemic are real heroes. The depth of the connection and respect between the animals and their caretakers is just beautiful. I will never understand how some people have such little regard for the animal kingdom.
