Rapture Practice
Rapture Practice | Aaron Hartzler
8 posts | 15 read | 20 to read
Sometimes salvation is found in the strangest places: a true story. Aaron Hartzler grew up in a home where he was taught that at any moment the Rapture could happen. That Jesus might come down in the twinkling of an eye and scoop Aaron and his family up to heaven. As a kid, Aaron was thrilled by the idea that every moment of every day might be his last one on planet Earth. But as Aaron turns sixteen, he finds himself more attached to his earthly life and curious about all the things his family forsakes for the Lord. He begins to realize he doesn't want the Rapture to happen just yet--not before he sees his first movie, stars in the school play, or has his first kiss. Eventually Aaron makes the plunge from conflicted do-gooder to full-fledged teen rebel. Whether he's sneaking out, making out, or playing hymns with a hangover, Aaron learns a few lessons that can't be found in the Bible. He discovers that the best friends aren't always the ones your mom and dad approve of, and the tricky part about believing is that no one can do it for you. In this funny and heartfelt coming-of-age memoir, debut author Aaron Hartzler recalls his teenage journey to find the person he is without losing the family that loves him. It's a story about losing your faith and finding your place and your own truth--which is always stranger than fiction.

I was pleasantly surprised by this one. It's a book club pick that I wasn't looking forward to. But Hartzler has an engaging voice, and I appreciated how he reflected on his upbringing with understanding and respect as well as obvious critique. I grew up in a Baptist home, and related to a lot of the quirks of Christian subculture he describes. But fortunately I grew up in a family that valued individual thinking instead of spiritual manipulation!

I could really identify with Aaron's life since I, too, was raised in an Independent Fundamental Baptist family. If you had a more "normal" childhood I still think you will find Aaron's story morbidly fascinating. #readjanuary #autobiography

beccaeve I was also raised independent fundamentalist Baptist. Adding his to my TBR... 7y

There was a lot I could relate to in this book...Even though my family growing up wasn't nearly as religious, I felt a lot of the same sense of obedience, powerlessness, guilt, anger, confusion, and love for my parents that Aaron did. This book left me thinking. I really enjoyed reading his story!

Heart wrenching for those who know Hartlzer's story because it echoes so many of those who were brought up in an oppressed home full of religious rules and cult-like doctrine. A well-written memoir with a heart-felt voice. Perfect for YA and adults.

Finished this memoir in less than 24 hours. It tells the story of a gay kid growing up in an evangelical family and how he struggled to balance his love for his family with his identity and beliefs. It's humorous, heartfelt, and full of compassion.

A very honest portrayal of what it is like growing up in an evangelical Christian family.
