The Harlem Hellfighters | Max Brooks
8 posts | 13 read | 14 to read
From bestselling author Max Brooks, the riveting story of the highly decorated, barrier-breaking, historic black regiment—the Harlem Hellfighters THE HARLEM HELLFIGHTERS is a fictionalized account of the 369th Infantry Regiment—the first African American regiment mustered to fight in World War I. From the enlistment lines in Harlem to the training camp at Spartanburg, South Carolina, to the trenches in France, bestselling author Max Brooks tells the thrilling story of the heroic journey that these soldiers undertook for a chance to fight for America. Despite extraordinary struggles and discrimination, the 369th became one of the most successful—and least celebrated—regiments of the war. The Harlem Hellfighters, as their enemies named them, spent longer than any other American unit in combat and displayed extraordinary valor on the battlefield. Based on true events and featuring artwork from acclaimed illustrator Caanan White, these pages deliver an action-packed and powerful story of courage, honor, and heart.

Plus Baker‘s Nat Turner, Titeux & Ameziane‘s Muhammad Ali - history not taught when I was in school. Why don‘t we celebrate Turner‘s rebellion as we do the colonial rebellion? Why no monuments to the brave Black men of the 369th who fought in WWI? Ali was not just the greatest because of his formidable skills in the ring, but in the world at large. https://cannonballread.com/2020/07/nat-turner-and-the-harlem-hellfighters-and-mu...

"Was it all for nothing? Only if we're forgotten." This graphic historical fiction was an interesting presentation of the Harlem Hellfighters. Highly recommended!

In honor of #blackhistorymonth, may I suggest adding The Harlem Hellfighters to your tbr stacks?
I went to Max Brooks' book signing and was impressed with the amount of research he did for this graphic novel. He was so passionate about the 369th Infantry Regiment from WWI and it really comes across on the page. #recommendsday

vivastory I was thinking about this graphic novel during the Daily Show tonight. Definitely deserves more attention. 7y

This is a fictional account of America's 369th Infantry Regiment during World War I. This highly decorated all black unit spent more time in combat than any other American unit. They never had a man captured or lost even a foot of ground to the enemy. Yet they dealt with discrimination, especially from their own govt. The book includes historical notes, bibliography, filmography, and discography for those who want to learn more. #ReadHarder2017

AmandaL Btw, this was a fascinating read and a great pick for a book about war for #ReadHarder 7y
tpixie Sounds great! 7y
AmandaL @tpixie It was very violent, but incredibly interesting. I love when a renewed interest in history is sparked through my reading fiction. 7y

Here are more books from my library haul for the 2017 Read Harder Challenge. Harlem Hellfighters is my war book. Cockroaches is my micropress pick. The Curious Incident is my frequently challenged book. Forbidden is my all POC POV pick. And The Sword of Shannara is my fantasy novel. 📚

ReadingEnvy Cockroaches is very good but rough. Definitely plan some self care! 7y
ReadingEnvy By the way how do you distinguish between indie and micro presses? Is that interchangeable? 7y
AmandaL @ReadingEnvy A micropress is a very small publisher. I think micropresses are usually indie, but an indie publisher is not necessarily a micropress. I googled best micropress books and found this article from PW, which led me to Cockroaches. http://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/columns-and-blogs/soapbox/article/67... 7y
