Cracked Up to Be
Cracked Up to Be | Courtney Summers
Perfect Parker Fadley isn't so perfect anymore. She's quit the cheerleading squad, she's dumped her perfect boyfriend, and she's failing school. Her parents are on a constant suicide watch and her counselors think she's playing games...but what they don't know, the real reason for this whole mess, isn't something she can say out loud. It isn't even something she can say to herself. A horrible thing has happened and it just might be her fault. If she can just remove herself from everybody--be totally alone--then everything will be okay...The problem is, nobody will let her.

I loved Summers‘ more popular Sadie, so I thought I‘d go back and give her debut novel a try. Despite a lot of good reviews for this one, I was sort of just “meh”.

Parker was the overachieving perfect, popular girl until she cracked after a traumatic event. She cracks so spectacularly with the same amount of effort as she previously put into being perfect. Knowing this was Summers‘ debut, I didn't expect it to be as well written as her recent work. And it wasn't, but it's still solid. Overall it's a compelling story of the pressures of living up to your own expectations even more so than those of others.

DimeryRene Great review! I really liked this one too. 😄 13mo

This book is about a teenage girl in high school who is struggling. Her friend is missing and we don‘t know what happened to her and the MC (Parker) has a lot of issues that we learn about. Trigger warning for suicide and rape. If you find these topics difficult, this book may be hard. I thought this was really well written and important for a YA audience because it shows you can be the most popular person in school and still be sad and alone.

Liked it just as much as Sadie. Tough stuff, tough girls, trying to figure it all out.

Parker will do anything to keep her secret from surfacing... but this time the cost might be more than she can afford. #crackeduptobe #courtneysummers

I have forced myself to read 80 pages of this book and I can‘t read another page. I loved the authors book Sadie so I was excited to read another one of her books. I just didn‘t like it at all. The main character I couldn‘t stand. There are to many books out there to read a book you don‘t like!

This book was definitely better than Some Girls Are but still...the buildup took so long and felt pretty anticlimactic. Summers ended the book to early, it felt like, because Parker finally admitted what's wrong with her and then everyone has plans to go away while she seeks help. Like wtf? Lol. Also wth is wrong with all the counselors and teachers in Summers' book? 🙄 #24B4Monday #YA

I wasn‘t really into this. The main character just annoyed me sometimes and it was just hard for me to really like her that much. I liked that this was pretty fast for me to get through, but it was kind of awful.

#julyinbooks18 #authorswhoarenewtoyou just starting this today. Another oldie I believe. I‘m trying to tackle a long tbr list I‘ve had for awhile with books that I added a few years ago, but never got around to.

Parker Fadley is a popular head cheerleader at her private school who's built up a reputation as a perfect student. Until she's not. As her overachiever facade slips away, Parker hurtles towards confronting a dark secret she's kept since last summer. This debut reminded me a lot of Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson, in both the spare, haunting writing style and difficult subject matter.
