The Pocket Wife
The Pocket Wife: A Novel | Susan Crawford
26 posts | 26 read | 28 to read
A stylish psychological thriller with the compelling intrigue of The Silent Wife and Turn of Mind and the white-knuckle pacing of Before I Go to Sleepin which a woman suffering from bipolar disorder cannot remember if she murdered her friend. Dana Catrell is shocked when her neighbor Celia is brutally murdered. To Danas horror, she was the last person to see Celia alive. Suffering from mania, the result of her bipolar disorder, she has troubling holes in her memory, including what happened on the afternoon of Celias death. Her husbands odd behavior and the probing of Detective Jack Moss create further complications as she searches for answers. The closer she comes to piecing together the shards of her broken memory, the more Dana falls apart. Is there a murderer lurking inside her . . . or is there one out there in the shadows of reality, waiting to strike again? A story of marriage, murder, and madness, The Pocket Wife explores the world through the foggy lens of a woman on the edge.

Huh. Well. This was a quick read but the "twist" felt a little forced?

Bailedbailed

I don't know if it's just the mood I'm in or what, but it just isn't holding my interest. I'm really not even one to bail on a book, but I went ahead and skipped to the end to see who did it, and I wasn't surprised at all.

"It isn't the big things Peter does that make her want to leave him; it's more the smaller things, like sticking her in his pocket in the middle of a thought - these demeaning, shrinking things he does that make her feel as trivial as a sneeze."

3.5 ⭐️s. The mentally ill, unreliable narrator (Dana) gave this book a frenetic pace. The author did make you feel like you were in Dana's head and it was not a fun place. The minor negatives for me- It dragged on a bit too long in places. The ending was a little too quickly tied up after the time it took to get there. It was well-written overall and I would read another book by this author. 4th book of #biblioweekend. 🍾📚

Enjoyed this "who done it" novel. Lots of dynamics played out with unfaithful spouse, mental health issues, divorce, and estranged parent/child relationship. Likable characters. Overall a really good read. Plus, this was my first audiobook through Overdrive...thanks to the awesome Litsy community!!! ❤️ you guys!

[DELETED] 2232195534 I've got this one on my list. Seems like I need to move it up! 8y

Double book book club! One night only!
All but one of us liked this book; the fast pace of the story, the bipolar heroine with the sketchy memory, and the ending were all pluses. A good read.

Between Desperate Houswifes and Law&Order, but it lacks of key elements tipical of crime fictions. Crawford is definitely a talented writer, and this book is a successful debut. Well-written and intriguing storyline and a powerfull psychological component. Disappointing conclusion, easy and quick.

Mystery, murder, mayhem, secrets, lies, plenty of twist and turns. Throw in some fears, torment, tiny notes and no one is not under suspicion of what actually happened and who is to blame.
