The Life of Insects
The Life of Insects | Victor Pelevin
3 posts | 3 read | 6 to read
Set in a crumbling Soviet Black Sea resort, The Life of Insects with its motley cast of characters who exist simultaneously as human beings (racketeers, mystics, drug addicts and prostitutes) and as insects, extended the surreal comic range for which Pelevin's first novel Omon Ra was acclaimed by critics. With consummate literary skill Pelevin creates a satirical bestiary which is as realistic as it is delirious - a bitter parable of contemporary Russia, full of the probing, disenchanted comedy that makes Pelevin a vital and altogether surprising writer.

Weekly Report

I've finished the utterly strange Life of Insects. I've also read the emotional Aue. After an odd ebook set back, I am continuing 2666 at home and King Lear of the Steppes is my subway read.

Pickpick

Sisyphus as a dung beetle, an American mosquito taking advantage of the post Soviet black market, a moth who quotes Marcus Aurelius & the I Ching. Pelevin's satire cleverly links the destinies of the anthropomorphic insects in surprising ways. Pelevin's absurdism is Beckett with a sense of humor. Easily one of the more unusual entries in the 1,001 Books editions.
