When Stella's father, Leon, disappears in September 2001, the police knock at her door. She baulks at their questions, not sure how to answer. 'What if I just write it down for you.' One summer, a long time ago, Stella sat watching her father cry while the sky clouded over. He had tried to make amends: for his failures, for forgetting to buy the doll she once hoped for, for the terrible things he had done. The first time Stella sensed that something was wrong was on her ninth birthday. There was an accident, and when she opened her eyes there was the tang of blood in her mouth. Leon was beside her. But not quite there. In the winter, when her father finally came home from hospital, he looked different. Looked at her differently. Now he was missing, and Stella held the key to his discovery. But did he want to be found? And after all that has passed, could Stella bring herself to help him? Stella's whole life has been stained by her father's very struggle to exist. Would this be her inheritance too? Could she choose the steady minutes of an ordinary day? Or would she follow the path of a man out of time? A masterful and deeply moving novel about inheritance and self-destruction, and of how the memories we carry and the blood we share discolour our view of the world ... and ourselves.

Mehso-so

Bleak. A novel that makes you work hard, which I don't mind, but is the child's name enough? Three stars. My 8th of the #2019stella prize longlist

Joanne1 Happy travels and I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this one. I struggled with it. PS I‘m doing the Stella long list too. 5y
AntoinetteBuchanan It is quite challenging @Joanne1 - how are you going with the longlist. I‘m going to screech to a halt soon waiting did Library requests 5y
Joanne1 @AntoinetteBuchanan I‘ve only done two so far. This one plus The Arsonist which I loved! I‘ve got Little Gods on hold from the library so will pick that up on Thursday. I‘m going to be waiting a while for Eggshell skull so will have to put some of the others on request in the meantime. 5y

Panpan

This has just been longlisted for the #stellaprize (Australian female authors award) and is getting lots of buzz. But... I just didn‘t get it. It was way too dreamy and vague for me, reality blended with dreams blended with psychosis and I couldn‘t find my footing anywhere. There was no sense of place or time and the characters were like out of focus photos with no definition. Perhaps it was too clever or sophisticated for me? #ozfiction

CarolynM Maybe it just wasn't very good. In my opinion a lot of the books that end up on prize lists aren't. 5y
Joanne1 @CarolynM I hope you‘re right. That would make me feel better. There are very mixed reviews on Goodreads. 5y

You know, I really do sometimes think I shouldn‘t be let out without supervision.

I took my son out to buy the latest Wimpy Kid book yesterday - he swept our back and front verandahs in order to earn it. And I came home with these 😬. I didn‘t even get the book I actually have to read for book club this month, Lisa Genova‘s Every Note Played 🙄, although in my defense the shop didn‘t have it.

But I really NEEEEDED these ones 😉.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks We NEED ALL the books!!! 🤣🤣🤣 6y
