The Challenge Culture
The Challenge Culture: Why the Most Successful Organizations Run on Pushback | Nigel Travis
3 posts | 2 read | 5 to read
The charismatic, accessible, and down-to-earth CEO of Dunkin' Brands (Dunkin' Donuts, Baskin-Robbins) shows how positive pushback--the discipline of "questioning everything without trashing anyone"--provides a unique results-oriented way to lead an organization to prosperity. We live in a world where the move from success to failure can happen in a flash. Customers, competition, changing societal mores, and technology can bring on existential crisis. But as Dunkin' Brands Chairman and CEO Nigel Travis shows in The Challenge Culture, businesses can cope with change and go on to thrive by instituting a culture that supports positive pushback: questioning everything without trashing anything or anyone. The ability to get colleagues to break out of conformity--especially when it means upending a culture of fear and authoritarianism--is a rare skill, one Nigel (everyone calls him Nigel) has been developing for decades. In a distinct, authentic, and authoritative voice, Nigel draws from a wide range of personal experiences--including the way Blockbuster dawdled in the face of the Netflix challenge, his early days at Dunkin' Donuts, and his recent foray into owning a UK soccer team--to show how a challenge culture is necessary to provide a human-oriented, results-driven blueprint for building a prosperous future. To keep up with the times and grow, people need to be allowed to speak up and question the status quo, talk in a civil way about difficult issues, debate across disciplines, disagree about strategies and tactics in order to successfully move forward together.

Pickpick

I would consider this as part business book, part career memoir, which I think works well. Nigel Travis, the CEO of Dunkin‘ Brands, has a big personality and a great sense of humor, both of which shine through as he relates his points through a variety circumstances. As someone who runs on Dunkin‘ daily (large original, black, please), I found the company details of particular interest.

Aims42 @britt_brooke awesome! Not being a big Starbucks fan, I did enjoy ‘Onward‘ by Charles Schultz too. I‘m excited for this now 😁 6y
britt_brooke @Aims42 I haven‘t read Onward, but I may eventually. I like Starbucks for certain things, but I hate their regular coffee. 🤢 6y
rather_be_reading stacked! 6y
Aims42 @britt_brooke Ugh, I hear ya!! 🤮 I only get their “froo froo” drinks AND when I have a gift card. Dunkin‘ is my everyday coffee (I brew it at home, but it‘s not the same as getting a cup at their store. they‘ve got me hooked 🙄) 6y
britt_brooke @Aims42 Haha, yes! Only their specialty ones and not too often. I brew my Dunkin‘ at home, too, but like you said, it‘s still not quite as good as going there. 🧡 6y

It‘s being #NationalDonutDay gave me an excuse to take the boys for a treat and snap a photo of my current ARC, written by Dunkin‘ Brands CEO #NigelTravis. Plus, this is my absolute favorite coffee. And even though I brew it daily at home, it‘s still better at DD! Very interesting read so far; part business book, part career memoir. 🍩🍩☕️

Reviewsbylola I‘ve never had DD coffee. Tell me what I‘m missing. 6y
britt_brooke @Reviewsbylola It‘s just a really solid, no-frills medium roast. I drink it black and it has a nice subtle flavor. ☕️👍🏻 6y
mrp27 I agree, I brew it everyday at home but it never tastes as good as in store! I also love DD for its no frills simplicity. 6y
Reviewsbylola Black?!? Girl 👏🏻💪🏻 I am the type that likes my frills. 😂 my typical drink is a Starbucks caramel macchiato. I at least need some flavored creamer. 6y
britt_brooke @mrp27 🧡🧡🧡 6y
britt_brooke @Reviewsbylola Caramel macchiato is my go-to at Starbucks. 🙌🏻 They‘re freaking delicious! I hate their regular coffee 🤢, but love their specialty stuff. I drink so much coffee daily, it‘s gotta be no-frills. 6y
