All Souls' Day
All Souls' Day | Cees Nooteboom
9 posts | 2 read | 3 to read
Arthur Daane, a documentary film-maker and inveterate globetrotter, has lost his wife and child in a plane crash. This title follows Arthur as he wonders the streets of Berlin, a city which provides the backdrop for a self-funded film that will show the world through his eyes.

Yesterday was All Souls‘ Day, a time to remember those who have died—so this #ThoughtfulThursday is a lovely opportunity to extend that remembrance. I‘m remembering my mom, who passed away in April. This picture is from her 85th birthday in March—a little over two weeks after this celebration, she was placed on hospice. My mother taught me to read when I was 3 years old—it‘s thanks to her that I‘ve been reading longer than I can remember. ⤵️

BarbaraJean She was an amazing teacher—she taught 2nd grade for many years before having her own children, and she taught children‘s Sunday School most of her adult life. She loved Jesus, her garden, and playing the violin. I‘m thankful she was my mother, and I‘m grateful for the memories and the legacy of faith she left for her three children and six grandchildren. 💜 (edited) 1y

I finished my tour of Berlin and learned so much history of the city. We visited the Brandenburg Gate and I also enhanced my learning about the gate with a quick perusal of Wikipedia.

I will be moving on to The Netherlands, I think. #Reading1001 #1001books #backpackEurope

Itchyfeetreader I missed you perhaps because I was in 1941 as well 😉 6y
KellyHunsakerReads @Itchyfeetreader we must have just been a few hours off! Where are you next? 6y
Itchyfeetreader Austria - but I have picked an unexpectedly chunky book so it might be a longer stay than I had anticipated. Still Vienna is lovely 😂😂😂 6y

I read an article about Berlin's best nightclubs, and the number one club was listed as Berghain & Panorama Bar. They refered to it as the Church of Techno. I didn't go, but I found some of the comments interesting:

"Bouncers are strict; the chances you won‘t get in are considerable. Hints for you: Do not go in big groups, do not wear your best clothes, do not laugh out loud or have too much fun in the queue – they simply don‘t like that.”

KellyHunsakerReads I did however visit a modern hippie dream called Sisyphus. But now I am back to the old lady style of #backpackEurope. 6y

I am now in Berlin! This city is quite urban and very hip. Food and nightlife seems to be a big draw. I have already indulged in kartoffelpuffer. Yum! #1001books #Reading1001 #backpackEurope

Pickpick

Arthur Daane is a lost soul. A Dutch documentary filmmaker and freelance cameraman, he has spent the past years wandering. Presently in Berlin, he walks the streets, filming, ruminating on history and memory, and having wonderful esoteric conversations with friends. Until he becomes obsessed with Elik.

I loved the fluid writing and descriptions, and was amused by the "chorus". But Nooteboom keeps everything at a distance. #1001books, #reading1001

Liz_M #BackpackEurope, @JenP @BookwormM So sad to be leaving the Netherlands, but I did snag some stroopwafels for the office, assuming I don't eat them all myself! 6y
JenP Love this update and photos! 6y
Liz_M The best part is it is all photos I took on a 48-hour work trip to Amsterdam in June. 😁 I probably won't be able to do that for many other countries. 6y

Having my favorite treat ever, stroopwafels, while in the company of expat Dutch artists.

#backpackEurope, @JenP

BookwormM I was in Amsterdam for work recently I came back with 7 different types of Stroopwaffles for the office favourite was the chocolate which is like a round twix followed by apple pie flavour 6y
Liz_M Nice! I only brought back 5 types (3 for the office, two for me) plus a container of salty black licorice. 😁 6y

#BackpackEurope #ServiceAnnouncement In case you're interested, this book seems to be mostly set in Berlin and the main character just visited Brandenburg Gate.

KellyHunsakerReads Hey thanks ... I have it planned for the wrong country. I need to change that. 6y
Liz_M I figured someone should benefit from my mistake -- I'm reading it for the Netherlands (Dutch author). 😁 😁 😁 6y

Finally checked into my Amsterdam hotel. Good thing I'll be spending all my awake time sight seeing, as the "view" of Rembrandtplein is rather dull.

#Backpackeurope

Home country: USA
Starting point: Netherlands, reading the tagged book
I haven't planned to "see" specific sites -- just reading books for various countries and playing it by ear -- especially since I've already had to make a change from the itinerary pictured here. ?
I'll be mostly posting updates on goodreads.
