Hoodoo | Ronald L. Smith
14 posts | 17 read | 8 to read
Twelve-year-old Hoodoo Hatcher was born into a family with a rich tradition of practicing folk magic: hoodoo, as most people call it. But even though his name is Hoodoo, he can't seem to cast a simple spell. Then a mysterious man called the Stranger comes to town, and Hoodoo starts dreaming of the dead rising from their graves. Even worse, he soon learns the Stranger is looking for a boy. Not just any boy. A boy named Hoodoo. The entire town is at risk from the Strangers black magic, and only Hoodoo can defeat him. Hell just need to learn how to conjure first. Set amid the swamps, red soil, and sweltering heat of small town Alabama in the 1930s, Hoodoo is infused with a big dose of creepiness leavened with gentle humor.

Thank @BrittanyReads for recommending this amazing book! I‘m a sucker for MG ghost books when I want something light to read, and this one was above and beyond. It was actually pretty creepy. The character of Hoodoo was a great narrator, very true to the tone and time, and multi-dimensional. Also helps that I loooove a good book about hoodoo and/or voodoo. Taught about the magic & culture as well. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

brittanyreads Yay! I'm so happy you enjoyed it!! 😆 I have his other book on my shelves but haven't read it yet! I hope it's just as good! 2y
Jess_Franzino @BrittanyReads I‘m so reading more of his books ❤️ You also inspired me to pick up some books by Darcy Coates! Sadly, BAM was out of “The Haunting of Ashburn House”, but they were having a “Buy 2 Get 1 Free” sale on her other books, so I got those. You have some killer taste in books 💕 2y
brittanyreads Aw, thank you! We have similar tastes! I'll keep an eye out for your reviews of books you love and add them to my TBR!! Definitely all the good ghost stories 👻 2y

Southern folk magic, witty likable characters and a good story. It's a little dark so recommended for mature upper elementary.

I'm combining day 27 of #booktober with today's #AllHallowsRead for this one! I love the colors, the design is so eerie...and that bird kinda freaks me out.

This southern gothic MG novel follows a boy named Hoodoo Hatcher as he deals with his family's folk magic, ominous dreams, and the mysterious Stranger. It's lined up next for my halloweekend reads! #creepycovers #scarycover

Reading Hoodoo and then found this article: http://mobile.nytimes.com/slideshow/2016/03/24/t-magazine/gordon-parkss-segregat... that brought some of the scenes to life.
