Create Dangerously | Albert Camus

To create today is to create dangerously. Any publication is an act, and that act exposes one to the passions of an age that forgives nothing' Camus's powerful essay, which is as important today as ever, argues against 'art for art's sake', while his Nobel Prize speech brilliantly sets out his vision of the artist's role and responsibilities.

This little volume is the transcript of a speech given by Camus in 1957. It is as relevant today as the day he wrote it. #writersoflitsy #artistsoflitsy

plemmdog I haven‘t read his novel The Plague, but will probably tackle it before the summer is over. I couldn‘t go near it at the start of the pandemic... 4y
Louise @plemmdog The Plague wouldn‘t be my first choice of reading material during a pandemic, either! 😷 4y

This is from one of my Penguin Moderns, from a speech given by Albert Camus in December 1957.

His speech argued about how an artist has a responsibility to challenge and provoke.

It‘s scary how prescient this is, so long before the current world of social media and people being famous just for being famous....

tournevis Thing is, there has always been people being famous for being famous. That's what the society pages were about back in the 19th and the first half of the 20th c. were about. It just seems more and bigger, but it's really not new. 5y

Sad to say I bailed on this one....I don‘t think I‘m intelligent enough to understand the turn of phrase...

Connster @greenhairdontcare I agree! I finished it and ordered a copy for all of the girls in my year 11 class - they‘ll love it! 5y

Albert Camus' assault on the Nazi opposition to intelligence is still relevant today. When did Society start looking at experts with such suspicion?

Hello, again, my dears! Litsy hasn't heard a peep out of me this past week as we went to the ends of the Earth (Pembrokeshire 💞: see postcard 👆) and there was next to no WiFi. I missed all your book-related enthusiasms but as for the rest of what passes for the world... not so much.

Now I've returned to bookmail from @Oryx ! Thank you, Emma; I look forward to reading it. I'm not familiar with Camus but this sounds very pertinent. ❤ #jbuk

rabbitprincess Lovely postcard, too 😊 6y
