See You Again in Pyongyang
See You Again in Pyongyang: A Journey into Kim Jong Un's North Korea | Travis Jeppesen
3 posts | 5 read | 6 to read
From ballistic missile tests to stranger-than-fiction stories of purges and assassinations, news from North Korea never fails to dominate the global headlines. But what is life there actually like? In See You Again in Pyongyang, Travis Jeppesen culls from his experiences living, traveling, and studying in North Korea to create a multi-faceted portrait of the country and its idiosyncratic capital city. Not quite memoir, not quite travelogue, not quite history book, Jeppesen offers a poignant and utterly original examination of the world's strangest country. Anchored by the experience of his five trips to North Korea, Jeppesen weaves in his observations and interactions with citizens from all walks of life, constructing a narrative rich in psychological detail, revealing how the North Korean system actually functions and perpetuates itself in the day-to-day, beyond the propaganda-fueled ideology. He challenges the Western notion that Pyongyang is merely a "showcase capital" where everything is staged for the benefit of foreigners, as well as the idea that Pyongyangites are brainwashed robots. Going beyond the clichs of "taboo tourism" and the "good versus evil" tenor of politicians and media reports, See You Again in Pyongyang is an essential addition to the literature about one of the world's most fascinating and mysterious places.

Travis had unusual access for an American when he enrolled in Korean language school in #NorthKorea for a month. He had previously traveled there on the standard package tours & wanted to learn more. While they still stuck to museums, beaches, & restaurants, he developed closer relationships with his minders than most tourists and met expats & diplomats. He was able to document the newly emerging upper class and merchant class in NK under Jong-un.

Megabooks Definitely recommend this for #readingasia2021! Great #audiobook, too. 3y

BarbaraBB This sounds so interesting. But I have The Orphan Master‘s Son lined up. Of which you also said it‘s so good. What to do 😉?! (edited) 3y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I think you‘d prefer Orphan, which I absolutely loved (more than this book even)! 3y

Is it weird that I chose my #NorthKorea book for #readingasia2021 by #audiobook narrator? Will Collyer rules!!

BarbaraBB Love the cover 😍 3y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB very propaganda-like. Definitely works perfectly!! 3y
BarbaraBB Exactly! I read one with a similar propaganda cover about North Korea 3y

Megabooks @BarbaraBB yes! That one is more classic and this is more modern, IMO. I also chose this book because the American author spent a month(!) there under Jong-un‘s rule. The rest of the books I‘ve read aren‘t that current. 3y
Cinfhen I totally approve 💕maybe I should use your book for my #NorthKorea / I was gonna read 3y
Librarybelle This sounds like it would be a fascinating read! 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen you MUST read Nothing to Envy!! I have read it 5 or 6 times (no exaggeration)!! It is an excellent book!! 3y
Megabooks @Librarybelle so far, it is. It‘s nothing like any of the other books I‘ve read about North Korea. He had unusually unfettered access. 3y
Cinfhen I‘m pretty sure I stacked that book because of you, Meg 💗 3y

At home sick on the holiday.

My instinct is always to read about things in the news that I don‘t understand. I immediately purchased this travel memoir on North Korea. It is educational.

Travis takes the reader on this disorienting spiral in a country that makes no sense to a westerner. I was very grateful to go on the journey with him. Plus—you know— America is two steps away, so maybe a glimpse into our future.
