Amongst Women | John McGahern
6 posts | 9 read | 8 to read
Moran is an old Republican whose life was forever transformed by his days of glory as a guerilla leader in the War of Independence. Now, in old age, living out in the country, Moran is still fighting - with his family, his friends, even himself - in a poignant struggle to come to terms with the past. 'A masterpiece.' John Banville 'John McGahern is the Irish novelist everyone should read.' Colm Tibn 'It is compact but not dense, spare yet rich, and brimming with tension.' Observer 'An overwhelming experience.' The Times 'McGahern brings us that tonic gift of the best fiction, the sense of truth - the sense of transparency that permits us to see imaginary lives more clearly than we see our own.' John Updike 'One of the greatest writers of our era.' Hilary Mantel, New Statesman

Amongst Women is the best-known novel of Irish writer John McGahern. It is widely considered to be his masterpiece, and it was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in the year of its release (1990). That was pretty much all I knew about it going in. From the blurb, I thought it might be similar to An Artist Of The Floating World... Well my book set in Ireland by an Irish author was a highlight. The opening line 'as he weakened, moran became afraid of his daughters' - moran is an incredible character, soldier for independence, harsh father, devoted to the rosary, we follow his life with prose which captures beautifully in a para what lesser writers need 100 pages to say. A complicated life brilliantly told.

I just checked and saw that spring starts on march 1st and im still 3 bks short. Well i should only be 2 today when i finish this wonderful story set near sligo, although this is a shocking scene, it feels dreadful to see father and son coming to blows, Michael 15 striking his aging but still bullying father brought me up short.

This was a short book that took ages to get into I only really felt engaged by the last 20 pages.

This felt like an Irish version of Independent People with the unlikeable male protagonist whose word is law and who believes what he does is right for everyone.

I like the women especially Rose who worked hard to make life better for everyone and who never gave up trying.
