In the magical time between night and day, when both the sun and the moon are in the sky, a child is born in a little blue house on a hill. And Miu Lan is not just any child, but one who can change into any shape they can imagine. The only problem is they can't decide what to be: A boy or a girl? A bird or a fish? A flower or a shooting star? At school, though, they must endure inquisitive looks and difficult questions from the other children, and they have trouble finding friends who will accept them for who they are. #bbrc Letter F #picturebook #a2z

I love how this story shows that you don't have to conform to other people's idea's of gender and gender identity. The watercolor illustrations are magical and breath-taking. This #ownvoices book about a non binary child that prefers they/them pronouns would be an excellent way to start a conversation about gender fluidity.

This is such a beautiful picture book about being nonbinary and facing bullying for it. The story is so sweet, the illustrations are lovely, and everything here is wonderful. Recommended for all ages.

An awkward repeated refrain detracts, & the bullying at school is resolved without explanation, but I‘m considering this a pick instead of so-so because there are so few #picturebooks portraying gender fluid children. I love that Miu Lan is referred to with the pronoun ‘they.‘ The watercolour art by Wai-Yant Li & Kai Yun Ching is beautiful, combining fantasy elements with children who appear ethnically #diverse. #lgbtq #CanadianAuthor

The text in Thom‘s picture book for children is disappointingly saccharine. An improved version of the verse above appears in Thom‘s novel, Fierce Femmes & Notorious Liars:
Whatever you dream of, I believe you can be
From the stars in the sky to the fish in the sea
Whether you walk or swim or crawl or fly high
I‘ll always be here, I‘ll be near standing by
And I will love, love, love you till the day that I die.
Both books were published 2017.
