The Paperboy | Dav Pilkey, Pilkey

I enjoyed reading this story because the boy in this story is determined to take on his role as the paperboy. I like how the boy is motivated to do his job while also dreaming about his future. I would use this in a classroom to ask students what responsibilities they have or what dreams they will to accomplish.

The Paperboy won a Caldecott Honor in 1997. This story is about a boy and his dog as they deliver the newspaper. The story is one about dreaming and hard work. The illustrations seem to be oil pastel, since the story is set in the early morning the oil pastels are a great choice since this requires lots of blending.

This RF, S Caldecott award winning book will be an easy read to addition to classroom libraries! The most prominent theme of jobs can act as a jumpstart for young minds to ponder on possible future jobs or professions they may enjoy. In this story, Pilkey gives a glimpse into the usual morning of a paperboy- from the struggle of getting out of a warm bed on a cold morning, to the moment he makes it back.

Betrinag This book would be best used in a S setting, using the tips from Scholastic. https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/articles/teaching-content/teacher-tips-story... UDL Principle 9.3 concerning the development of self-assessment and reflection, along with EL 5 concerning teaching technical vocabulary, can be accomplished with this book. #ucflae3414sp21 3y
DrSpalding This book could be considered historical fiction. Sadly in most locations we no longer have paper boys delivering the newspaper by bicycle. Excellent resource and excellent alignment with your principles and strategies. Storytelling could work quite well! 3y

This RF cadecolt winning book tells about a boy and his most loved part of the day, when he delivers newspapers while everyone is asleep. This is a great RA to sit on the carpet and read with students. UDL standard you can use is activate or supply background knowledge (3.1). You can do this by asking students what they wake up early for and if they have seen the newspaper in their yard.

KatiaP ESOL strategies that can be used is 1 and 4, teach questioning for clarification and link lesson topic to students‘ prior knowledge. So during the story have the students ask questions and talk about what they may know about the newspapers or how it is delivered. More about the author: https://pilkey.com/. #UCFLAE3414SP20 4y

I think this book would be a great lesson for my students one day. I could teach them that people are doing their jobs even when they are still sleeping. It also teaches them responsibility, even when they are cuddled up in bed in the morning they have a job to get to which is school! After school they can go home and play and relax just like the paperboy.

The Paperboy by Dav Pilkey, 1997. Caldecott Honor Book. I thought this book was eye opening. The boy had a responsibility every morning before anyone woke up and had a job to do. I thought it was cute that his dog came along for the ride even though he wanted to stay in the warm bed. I liked how the illustrations took up the whole page.

The Paperboy by Dav Pilkey was written in 1997 and won the Caldecott award. This book leaves the reader feeling at peace and relaxed as the cool and dark tones of the pictures remind you of the early morning before the sun has begun to touch the earth. It tells a nice story of the boy who delivers the paper and how his morning is different than the norm.

The Paperboy is a cute story about a little boy and his dog, and how they use teamwork to deliver newspapers. The boy and dog not only work hard, but show a loving relationship through the story too. It is probably relatable for a lot of children who have dogs (or other pets). This is my favorite so far!

The Paperboy written and illustrated by Dav Pilkey is a fiction picture book that won the silver Caldecott Honor. This book talks about a paper boy and his dogs morning routine from not wanting to wake up, to delivering the papers before the sun comes up, to coming home and going back to bed. #ucflae3414su19

DeannaP After reading the book I would have the students get into small groups and have them write about a scene in the book and question what the paper boy might be doing, thinking, and feeling. After they finish writing I would have them as a group write and act out the scene. An E.D strategy to go with this lesson would be to “offer ways of customizing the display of information” for example while acting out I may suggest one student being a narrator. 5y
DeannaP An ESOL strategy to go with this would be to “use student pairs for team learning”. Lesson: http://teacher.scholastic.com/products/face/pdf/literacy-events/LiteracyEvent_Sa... 5y
Macker11 I love the activity that you have the students doing after they read this book! They get to be creative and write about the scene in the book, then act it out! Acting it out, is definitely a good strategy for the ESOL learners! 5y
Dylanburgett I‘ve never heard of this book before but since it‘s a Caldecott award winner I‘ll definitely have to check it out! 5y
DrSpalding Quality resource however you are not being explicit about how you would use it in the classroom… RA for read aloud for example. 5y
