Mommy's Khimar
Mommy's Khimar | Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow
7 posts | 16 read | 6 to read
A young Muslim girl spends a busy day wrapped up in her mothers colorful headscarf in this sweet and fanciful picture book from debut author and illustrator Jamilah Tompkins-Bigelow and Ebony Glenn. A khimar is a flowing scarf that my mommy wears. Before she walks out the door each day, she wraps one around her head. A young girl plays dress up with her mothers headscarves, feeling her mothers love with every one she tries on. Charming and vibrant illustrations showcase the beauty of the diverse and welcoming community in this portrait of a young Muslim American girls life.

This was such a beautiful story and a little girl and her mommy‘s khimar. She sees all the things that her mom can do while wearing her khimar. She sees that she can do anything while wearing it. Such a loving story!

#BloomingBibliophiles Day 2: There is subtlety in this story, a resounding joy that invites the reader in. The lilting, rhythmic quality of the language paired with the overflowing #sunshine in the pages, is enough to make this book a favourite among most young readers. My review of this gorgeous title: https://wp.me/pDlzr-kh1

This is such a lovely story about what a khimar, her own and her mother's, means to this little girl. I think it makes for lovely representation of what faith and culture can mean on an individual basis. The illustrations are incredibly cute too. Recommended!

A young girl finds comfort and delight in playing with her mother‘s scarves.

From playing around the house with her loving family, to wearing her khimar at the mosque, this is a beautiful story of love and acceptance - “[Grandma] doesn‘t go to the mosque like Mommy and Daddy do. We are family and we love each other just the same.”

A little girl describes her family and her mom‘s khimar, or headscarf. The representation (of a Muslim-American family, of a brown family, of a religious community, of a family that doesn‘t all share the same religion) is wonderful. My favorite thing, though, is that it hits all these buttons in a non-didactic, kid-friendly, high-interest way. This is a book I can see families sharing again and again. #kidlit #raisingreaders
