Barbara Cleverly, bestselling author of the Joe Sandilands series, introduces an ingenious new sleuth who navigates 1920s Cambridge, a European intellectual capital on the cusp of dramatic change. England 1923: Detective Inspector John Redfyre is a godsend to the Cambridge CID. The ancient university city is at war with itself: town versus gown, male versus female, press versus the police force and everyone versus the undergraduates. Redfyre, young, handsome and capable, is a survivor of the Great War. Born and raised among the citys colleges, he has access to the educated lite who run these institutions, a society previously deemed impenetrable by local law enforcement. When Redfyres Aunt Hetty hands him a front-row ticket to the years St. Barnabas College Christmas concert, he is looking forward to a right merrie yuletide noyse from a trumpet soloist, accompanied by the organ. He is intrigued to find that the trumpet player isscandalouslya young woman. And Juno Proudfoot is a beautiful and talented one at that. Such choice of a performer is unacceptable in conservative academic circles. Redfyre finds himself anxious throughout a performance in which Juno charms and captivates her audience, and his unease proves well founded when she tumbles headlong down a staircase after curtainfall. He finds evidence that someone carefully planned her death. Has her showing provoked a dangerous, vengeful woman-hater to take action? When more Cambridge women are murdered, Redfyre realizes that some of his dearest friends and his family may become targets, andequally alarminglythat the killer might be within his own close circle.

#staycation #poweroutage #Day6
This book has been fun to read/listen to during power outage. Can‘t take anything heavy. Reading some from my #bookspin book, but sporadically.

Today we hiked just 2.5 miles in a green wooded forest above and parallel to the Farmington River in Windsor, CT. Invigorating! A day of experiencing natural beauty. So needed during these 6 days ( so far) of surreal time without power.

TheAromaofBooks Such a long time without power!! About 10 years ago we had a huge wind storm & some people around here were without power for almost 3 weeks! It was crazy times. 4y
kspenmoll @TheAromaofBooks 3weeks! Our power came back on tonight! 6 days sounds like not so much compared to 3 weeks! We are happy to spend the next day scrubbing the refrig, sorting out other after effects. 😃 4y
TheAromaofBooks I'm so glad it's back on!! Luckily it wasn't the entire area that was out for that long, so most of us where able to either find someone to help or be the person who was helping haha It was in September, which was a really random month for this wind storm to occur, so the pleasant weather definitely helped! Hopefully everything goes back to some semblance of normal for you now!! 4y
kspenmoll @TheAromaofBooks refrig on & sparkling! Laundry going, internet on. Whats not to be grateful for?! 4y
TheAromaofBooks Yay!! Sometimes it's nice to get a little reminder of how comfortable our everyday lives really are!! 😂 4y

#bookreport
Murder on the SS Rosa: novella.Enjoyed the attention to detail of period dress, a woman going to med school- rare at the time (1920s), but plot, murder rather simplistic.
Murder at Half Moon Gate:Adored this Regency mystery, contrasts of London neighborhoods, and its people, rich and poor. Collaboration between a woman political “cartoon” satirist and a crotchety, sarcastic, idealistic nobleman to combat evil that lurks in this world.

Mehso-so

Good mystery, but the pace really dragged. I enjoyed the setting and characters - I'm always looking for good mysteries set in the 1920s.

LegosAndPajamas Have you read the Miss Fisher series? Its a lot of fun (and a fun television show, too)! 6y
Amie @Insearchofbooks yep! Working my way through that series for the second time and have watched the tv series several times. Love it! 6y

*So* enjoyed this first book in the new Detective Inspector Redfyre series. Feminist, girl gang mystery with a Wodehouse-esque tone!
