The Triumph of Christianity
The Triumph of Christianity: How a Forbidden Religion Swept the World | Bart D. Ehrman
9 posts | 4 read | 3 to read
From the New York Times bestselling authority on early Christianity, the story of how Christianity grew from a religion of twenty or so peasants in rural Galilee to the dominant religion in the West in less than four hundred years. Christianity didnt have to become the dominant religion in the West. It easily could have remained a sect of Judaism fated to have the historical importance of the Sadducees or the Essenes. In The Triumph of Christianity, Bart Ehrman, a master explainer of Christian history, texts, and traditions, shows how a religion whose first believers were twenty or so illiterate day laborers in a remote part of the empire became the official religion of Rome, converting some thirty million people in just four centuries. The Triumph of Christianity combines deep knowledge and meticulous research in an eye-opening, immensely readable narrative that upends the way we think about the single most important cultural transformation our world has ever seenone that revolutionized art, music, literature, philosophy, ethics, economics, and law.

Before the emperor Constantine became Christian he worshipped Helios. And here is an image of Helios surrounded by the signs of the Zodiac from a 5th century synagogue (!)

I really enjoyed this book on audio. Nothing crazy or controversial, but a nice summary of the history of Christianity from a tiny sect to an empire-wide religion of the underclasses, to the empire‘s official religion. Eventually more than half the empire was Christian.

Graywacke Among the things I learned: 1. Christians weren‘t really persecuted all that badly 2. Rejection of other gods may have been the most important thing in its spread, because it meant it eliminated other religions 3. Before Constantine Christians argued eloquently for freedom of religion. Under Constantine they won this! But then they persecuted... 4. Maybe Christianity originally spread as an eastern mystery cult. 5. It was really small a long time. 6y
Texreader I have always appreciated the fact that the first Christians were such rebels. 6y
Texreader Your no. 1: that‘s interesting and not quite what I‘ve read—always hard to know the truth with history; but even so I‘m not sure I‘d have the guts to put up with even a 10th of the persecution they endured, and that many faiths, Christian and otherwise, endure today. 6y
Graywacke @Texreader they were definitely rebels. The persecution history surprised me. Apparently the stories leave an exaggerated impression. There are only a handful of actually well-documented martyrs, for instance. 6y

My next audiobook. Trying to supplement my NT reading. This is helpful but some of his assertions make me uncomfortable - feels like not quite accurate, if that makes sense. And sometimes “not quite” can have big implications. Anyway, I‘m engaged.

Finishing up Ehrman's Triumph of Christianity. He's an important scholar in his specialty, should he ever return to it, but he wings it on ancient history, especially social history, ignores comparative work, and is attracted to bad arguments like a Vaudevillian to banana peels.

There is, of course, much that‘s good here. It‘s a great story and puzzle. But if you know the literature at all, there‘s little that‘s both new and good.

Graywacke Listening to this now. I‘m not that well read on the literature, but I tend to agree with you. He over-simplifies in uncomfortable ways. 6y

My husband is participating in a poker night at a local club so I‘m just chilling with Jesus until he‘s done. Sadly I‘m not having my usual Malibu Baybreeze because I‘m just getting over a stomach bug. 🤢

So I was checking out my new mini backpack for vacations that I bought and of course I had to test its book-carrying ability. Then this happened. (Jesus is watching you... 👀)

I was on my own for dinner last night, so Chipotle it was! Plus a book I discovered thanks to NPR. I felt it was appropriate for this weekend with the holiday. #food
