Cast a Cold Eye
Cast a Cold Eye | Alan Ryan, Professor of Politics Alan Ryan
7 posts | 7 read | 7 to read
Jack Quinlan, an American writer, travels to a small village in the remote western part of Ireland to research a book on the Irish Famine. The quiet, picturesque village seems just the place to spend a few months writing, but beneath its placid exterior lurk dark secrets. Why do the locals behave so strangely? What is Father Henning, the enigmatic parish priest, hiding? And what is the meaning of the strange ritual Jack observes in the cemetery? The search for answers will lead him to the terrifying discovery that the ghosts of the past linger on in the present, and they cry out for blood ... An atmospheric, haunting ghost story, "Cast a Cold Eye" (1984) is a slow burn horror novel that will keep readers in suspense until its chilling conclusion. "Alan Ryan is one of the brightest lights among the new generation of horror writers." - Peter Straub, author of "Ghost Story" "The writing is beautiful, haunting, hypnotic ... The ghosts of "Cast a Cold Eye" have not left me." - William Peter Blatty, author of "The Exorcist" "[Ryan] is in the front ranks of today's horror writers." - Karl Edward Wagner, in "Twilight Zone"

All in all I will give this book 2 stars for the author's effort and because I didn't hate the book but I really didn't like it either. Can't say I'd recommend this one.

#TeamCthulhu I didn't plan to finish this book so soon, but about halfway through I couldn't put it down. So @jillannjohn I will be mailing this out to you this weekend. I hope you also enjoy it. Druzy is quite bored by it 😸

A beautiful, atmospheric ghost story set in rural Ireland. The story of an American who rents an isolated cottage for a three month stay. The story unfolds slowly, but felt perfectly paced to me.

Crash I didn't know that Koji Suzuki had a new book out. Must investigate. (edited) 6y
BiblioNyan Cold Moon Over Babylon is classic Southern Gothic Horror novel. Very good if you enjoy that genre. 6y

2🌟🌟If I could rename this book 📖 it would be “An Obscure ‘Sort of‘ Irish Ghost 👻 Story” w/a huge emphasis on obscure & sort of 🤦🏻‍♀️. This book was so disappointing. The main character basically drives around & goes to pubs most of the book. There‘s a ridiculously over done cheesy AF sex scene (one to be exact-very anticlimactic too). Also who sees ghosts constantly and says nothing all the damn time like la la la 🙄🤦🏻‍♀️🤮- Hard pass!👎🏼

TricksyTails Welp, I dodged a bullet eh? 6y

Set in a remote Irish village, Cast A Cold Eye is a ghost story that‘s big on atmosphere and two-dimensional characters. There‘s a budding romance between the 30-something protagonist and a skinny, fresh-out-of-college virgin with huge boobs that adds nothing to the story. (A dog really would have made a better companion.) Yet, at the core of the book, is a classic tale that left me feeling haunted. 3.5/5

Had my next book picked and then this gem from @ValancourtBooks showed up in the mail. It‘s from the Nocturnal Readers Box. Why aren‘t they on Litsy?
Anyway, here‘s Cecil doing his best to cast a cold eye. #catsofLitsy
