Sky People | Patricia Grace
4 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
In this collection of Patricia Grace's stories we meet the sky people, those under the guardianship of Ranginui and Sky Parent, who are the unwanted, the dispossessed, the wounded in love. But shining through even the darkest human condition is the light to which sky people everywhere aspire. To love and in turn be loved; to create and to belong; even, perhaps, to fly.

Pickpick

The people in this wonderful collection of short stories are “under the guardianship of Ranginui the Sky Parent.” They are the unwanted & the dispossessed. The genres cover a broad range, reminding me of Lesley Nneka Arimah‘s work. My faves are the two funniest: Sun‘s Marbles (a myth retelling) and Ngati Kangaru (colonialism turned on its head). I picked this up because I loved Grace‘s novel Potiki & wasn‘t disappointed. #Indigenous #NZauthor

“What are you doing today?”
“Fundraising.”
“A raffle or something?”
“Chocolate cake.”
“You know that gateway,” she said, “they‘re making it too flash. Don‘t have to be that big & flash & cost so much. A carved pou each side, painted arch would be all right. Neat & tidy. No, they have to go for front & back carvings, up down & sideways, all those tongues poking in all directions as if money comes down with rain. How much a ticket?”
“A dollar.”

When Maui booby-trapped Sun then clobbered him over the head with a hunk of bone shaped like two parts of a bootmaker‘s last, he won, for all time, high praise as the pioneer of daylight saving.
