Planet of Exile
Planet of Exile | Ursula K. LeGuin
The Earth colony of Landin has been stranded on Werel for ten years - and each of Werel's years is over 60 terrestrial years! After so long an exile, the lonely and dwindling human settlement is beginning to feel the strain. Every winter - a season that lasts a decade and a half - the Earthmen have neighbours: the humanoid hilfs, a nomadic people who only settle down for the cruel cold spell. The hilfs fear the Earthmen, whom they think of as witches, and call the farborns. But both peoples have common enemies: the hordes of ravaging barbarians called gaals, and eerie preying snow ghouls. Can the hilfs and the farborns overcome their mutual suspicions and join forces? Or will they both be annihilated?

I have been reading the Hainish Series on and off for years. I rather enjoyed the second instalment. I‘m looking forward to part three.

Another great story, the 2nd in the Hainish novels; I won't call it the Hainish cycle since Ursula K Le Guin herself said “The thing is, they aren't a cycle or a saga. They do not form a coherent history.“
Unlike the first novel, this happens on Werel and the 2 main groups are Tevarans, a tribe of humanoid extraterrestrial indigenous to the planet, the other being humans from a dwindling colony of Earth. Another pick!

On a world where the farborns were abandoned some eight years before, and each year lasts roughly the lifespan of a man, the farborn leader reaches out to the nearest native leader to combine forces against a raiding horde. Old prejudices don't die easily, and they were in for a long winter. I love this author's imagination!

Dear library free pile: I find a discard stamp so close to Ursula Leguin's signature downright offensive! Your loss is my gain, but my goodness! 😳

Another old #sff find! An Ace Double with LeGuin on one side and Disch in the other! Don Wollheim (founder of DAW) worked on these while at Ace! #scifi #aceroc #dawbooks #history
