Cataract City: A Novel | Craig Davidson
9 posts | 5 read | 3 to read
A searing novel about two friends on opposite sides of the law, from the author of Rust and Bone, "a writer of immense power" (Peter Straub) On the Canadian side of Niagara Falls, life beyond the tourist trade isn't easy. Locals like Duncan Diggs and Owen Stuckey have few chances to leave. For Duncan, that means shift work on a production line. For Owen, it means pinning it all on a shot at college basketball. But they should know better; they've been unlucky before. As boys, they were abducted and abandoned in the woods. Though they made it out alive, the memory of that time won't fade. Over the years they drift apart, but when Duncan is drawn into a chaotic world of bare-knuckle fighting and other shady dealings, Owen, now a cop, can't look the other way any longer. Together, they'll be forced to survive the wilderness once more as their friendship is pushed to the limit in Cataract City, a white-hot novel by the rising star Craig Davidson.

Pickpick

#doublespin success. Canadian writer of The Saturday Night Ghost Club (and, writing as Nick Cutter, of several horror novels), Cataract City traces the friendship between Duncan and Owen over many years. It‘s violent, full of nostalgia and dark humour, and I really enjoyed it. @TheAromaofBooks

Bookish.SAM What?!? I didn‘t realize he wrote as Cutter as well 🤯 I read this book ages ago and have Saturday Night sitting here waiting... and the Cutter books have been on my TBR for a while. 3y
TheLudicReader @Bookish.SAM I loved Saturday Night, so good. The only Cutter book I‘ve read is The Troop which was icky and creepy. I have at least one other on my shelf, that I haven‘t read it yet. He is very talented. 3y

Chock full (too full?) of men doing manly things: demolition derby, greyhound racing, underground boxing... Davidson has written some beautiful lines and an interesting (if cliche) relationship between the two main characters.

Picked this one up after reading the reviews on goodreads . Definitely not my type of book. The narration is very descriptive but there is nothing surprising about the plot. Owen and Duncan's friendship feels very real . The first half of the book is good and a quick read but second half has a couple of boring patches. I would say its a very masculine book and pick this if you like reading about greyhound racing , dog fighting and boxing .

#riotgrams Day 21 #coolspines Bonus Round :)

I put out my temporary Little Free Library for the first time today (will build something permanent come spring)! Does anyone else have one? Do you find yourself checking every hour to see if anyone had taken anything? Or is that just me...

geodynamical_nonfiction I took a book from my free local library last year and gave it to someone as a present. Now I finally have a different book I plan to donate back into the FLL. Take something, leave something. :) 7y
TheKidUpstairs @geodynamical what book are you going to donate? I'm so interested to see which books people take, and what they donate. It's like a little social study. First two books to go were Cataract City and Broken Skin. 7y
