First Year Out
First Year Out: A Transition Story | Sabrina Symington
9 posts | 6 read | 14 to read
From laser hair removal and coming out to her parents, through to dating, voice training and gender reassignment surgery, this intimate and witty graphic novel follows the character of Lily as she transitions to living as her true, female self. Providing support and guidance on a range of issues such as hormones, medical procedures and relationships, the story traces the everyday thoughts, emotions and struggles many trans and non-binary people face and seeks to empower those who are starting to question their gender as well as promoting wider discussion about the complexities of gender and identity. Based on the author's own experiences as a trans woman, this honest and powerful work is a testament to being who you are and a celebration of gender diversity.

Mehso-so

This is a good introductory book to transgenderism and what transitioning looks like. There are a few bits that are a bit messy but that could be because it was published 2017

Hated the artwork and lettering which is why it's so-so for me

Graphic novel that tells the story of a trans woman going through her first year of transitioning. It's kind of a Trans 101 for cis audiences, shown through the character's perspective to empathize and humanize trans & gnc people's experiences, thoughts, and fears. I liked it!

An interesting graphic novel approach to the first year of transitioning for a trans woman, as written by a trans woman. It is a solid place to start of people looking for an accessible entry into learning about the process. The sweet characters made the process more enjoyable, and it was nice for there to be as much positivity and happiness compared to many trans narratives in the media.

One of the many things I did not know about an average pre op transgenders life. Makes sense now but never occurred to me that this is something a person would have to do to change their vocals. Really interesting stuff ❤️😁

I love autobiographical graphic novels as I learn so much about people‘s lives, people I would probably not read up on in fiction books. This was a fascinating book about how a transgender person lives their lives , from before the op and beyond. Looking at the physical issues as well as the emotional and the family and friends in between this was a very touching book which will bring a tear to your eye by the end.

LitsyGetsGraphic Sounds awesome 😎 it seems it can be a great discussion about this one. Make it as a suggestion for our April read 🙏🏻 6y
BruceWalken Oh thanks. Yeah it was a very informative read with a slightly cartoony style which worked in the books benefit. What do I do to suggest a topic? I‘m still a bit of a noob on here lol 6y

My Aunt and Uncle surprised me with these books when I visited this weekend!! They sometimes just check my Amazon list and pick books off it! They said it was because they didn‘t get anything for me for My birthday but it was so generous! Really excited for these.
